Philadelphia Eagles: Nnamdi Asomugha and 10 Possible Offseason Aquisitions
The Philadelphia Eagles had a strong showing last season, but there were a few positions that they had obvious weaknesses in.
With a strong free agency class available this year the Eagles could really land a game-changing player this offseason that will greatly add to their chances at a stronger post-season run this year.
Not to mention that Andy Reid told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the Eagles were going to be aggressive in free agent market once the lockout is lifted.
Here are the 11 best choices for the Eagles to acquire before the 2011 season kicks off.
Nnamdi Asomugha
1 of 11
In my opinion one of the biggest weak spots on either side of the ball for the Eagles is their defensive coverage play besides guys named Asante Samuel.
Adding Nnamdi Asomugha—the best defensive player available in free agency—would be as huge to the Eagles defense as adding Mike Vick was for their offense.
Asomugha—a three-time Pro Bowler— would compliment Samuel perfectly, allowing a lot of the deep play protection to be taken off his shoulders and shared with Asomugha, making both of their play level to go up not having to worry about being the main play maker.
Although Asomugha did not record an interception for the first time in four seasons, Asomugha still has plenty to offer and will fill one weak spot on the Eagles team going forward.
Davin Joesph
2 of 11
Last year the Eagles offensive line had it's issues with protecting quarterback Michael Vick. Though Vick can scramble and get himself out of trouble a lot of the time, Vick still took too many hard hits that he should not have due to a some weak links in the offensive line.
Guard Davin Joesph could aid Jason Peters in keeping the opposing team from getting to Vick so fast saving him some unneeded hits and create more time to make a play down field.
Joesph is a former Pro Bowl selection—in 2008—and adding him with another Pro Bowl caliber player in Peters this would make the Eagles offense that more potent giving the Eagles a better chance at winning each and ever game.
Jason Babin
3 of 11
The Eagles had more than one weak spot in their 12th-ranked defense last season. In addition to the cornerback play, the defensive tackles were in need of some help as well.
Defensive end, Jason Babin, a former Eagle—was let go in 2009—went on to have his best year as a pro this past season with the Tennessee Titans. He had 58 tackles, 12.5 sacks and two forced-fumbles, earning himself a spot on the Pro Bowl team.
Adding Babin to the mix will increase the Eagles rushing defense—which was 15th in the NFL last season—which could use all the help it can get.
Antonio Cromartie
4 of 11
Another cornerback the Eagles can help their struggling pass protection with is the New York Jets Antonio Cromartie.
The 27-year-old Cromartie would be a nice pick-up coming off a 41 tackle, three interception year in 2010.
Having Cromartie out on the field with Asante Samuel will be a double-threat of sorts for opposing wide receivers, and would make quarterbacks think twice about throwing down field with one of the two defending their target.
This pick-up is of course if the Eagles don't land the Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
Mathias Kiwanuka
5 of 11
Another potential free agent defensive end that the Eagles would be smart in signing is New York Giants' own Mathias Kiwanuka.
Kiwanuka had had at least 12 sacks a season leading up to the 2010 season, where he suffered a herniated disc in October which put him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.
Assuming he has fully recovered from his injury Kiwanuka would be a major lift in the Eagles pass rushing defense, and it would be nice to steal a quality player away from the NFC rivals to the north.
Carlos Rogers
6 of 11
Yet another cornerback on the market the Eagles could better their offense with would be Washington Redskins Carlos Rogers.
The six-year NFL vet had a decent season in 2010 racking up 54 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in just 12 games–but also had multiple hamstring injuries.
Rogers is not as good as Nnamdi Asomugha or Antonio Cromartie, but it he is the one they can get then he will be a better choice to anything else the Eagles currently have to compliment Asante Samuel.
Having a Pro Bowl-caliber player like Samuel to feed off of, Rogers numbers should improve—even if slightly—and make signing Rogers look all the more better.
Ike Taylor
7 of 11
The last cornerback on the list is Ike Taylor of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Taylor's 2010 stat line includes 66 tackles, two interceptions one sack and one forced fumble. Similar to Carlos Rogers, Taylor is the back-up option but will be an efficient piece that's missing in Eagles defensive puzzle.
Another plus with Rogers is his playoff experience.
Having been part of the Super Bowl-winning team in 2008 and the Super Bowl losing team last season with the Steelers, having someone with Super Bowl experiences could rub off on his teammates when the playoffs roll around.
Derrick Ward
8 of 11
With back-up running back Jerome Harrison likely to be on a different NFL roster in 2011, the Eagles will need someone to come in and help LeSean McCoy carry the rushing load.
Derrick Ward of the Houston Texans could be a good fit.
Ward had 350 yards and four touchdowns in 50 rushes last season.Ward has clearly been a back-up caliber running back over the last couple of seasons and the Eagles won't have too heavy of expectations of the seven year veteran, which will benefit his play.
If Ward can contribute similar numbers to what he did last season it would be just what the Eagles need in a back-up running back, someone who can keep the ball moving and score a touchdown here and there
Justin Blalock
9 of 11
Another possible free agent guard the Eagles should consider is the Atlanta Falcons' Justin Blalock.
Though he is not the most exciting guard on the NFL, it is tough to find any weak spots in his game.
Protecting Michael Vick has to be one of the top priorities in 2011, and adding someone like Blalock to do so will be a step in the right direction.
Lyle Sendlein
10 of 11
With Max Jean-Gilles becoming a free agent and Nick Cole being manhandled when he played in place of Jean-Gilles in the playoff off loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Eagles could use a new center/guard to add protection for Michael Vick and company.
Arizona Cardinals Center, Lyle Sendlein would be a quality signing at the position. After starting in just three games as a rookie, Sendlein was mad the permanent starter in 2008 and hasn't missed a game, and started in every game he's played since.
With the other top centers available being in their twilight years, or being injury prone, Sendlein is the best choice for the Eagles out of the current free agency pool.
Charles Johnson
11 of 11
Charles Johnson from the Carolina Panthers would be a player who would end the Eagles problems at the defensive end position of a year ago.
The 24-year-old fourth-year pro out of the University of Georgia, had a quality 2010 season recording 51 tackles, 11.5 sacks and a forced fumble during the season. The Eagle can expect Johnson to have similar numbers if they nab him out-of free agency.
Being as young as Johnson is, the signing could give the Eagles a quality defensive end for years to come if they sign him to a long term deal.
