Which Chicago Bulls Can Help MVP Derrick Rose Reach the NBA Finals?
With the Miami Heat defense focusing on Derrick Rose, the Bulls need to find ways to score aside from putting the ball in Rose's hands. Pinning all their hopes on the 2011 MVP's drives and dishes will just wear him out while making them very predictable on offense.
The obvious option is their high-priced offseason acquisition, Carlos Boozer. Boozer could be used as more than a pick-and-roll player. The former Utah Jazz forward has shown an ability to face up and post up throughout his career, which has included some postseason successes.
This gives them a chance to put the Heat's bigs in foul trouble. Playing inside-out would also get their perimeter players better scoring opportunities as they will catch the Heat players in rotation instead of having to go around them in a set defense.
Luol Deng, their underrated swingman, could also run off screens and do catch-and-shoots like Rip Hamilton. He was actually used this way for stretches by old Bulls coach Vinny del Negro.
This should help wear down Dwyane Wade or LeBron James further as they fight through screens. He doesn't need to have too many touches but making him a threat would reduce some of the defensive attention on Rose.
Lastly, shooter Kyle Korver can play some post-up offense in spots, especially if they force a switch with Miami's smaller guards, either Mike Bibby or Mario Chalmers. Doing this for three or four plays, would help Rose get some blows and also help get Korver into the flow of the game.
In the end, varying their offensive sets will lessen the toll on Rose and allow his attacks to be more efficient, as he becomes less predictable. This will help them reach their first NBA finals since the great Michael Jordan's days.
