MLB Draft 2011: Pittsburgh Pirates Considering High School Pitcher Dylan Bundy
Holding the No. 1 overall pick should bring in a future star on most occasions. The problem with the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft is that there isn’t a Bryce Harper or Stephen Strasburg. There are about three or four players that are being considered.
Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Pirates beat writer, tweeted (@Colin_Dunlap), “Just got a call after leaving Milwaukee from someone I trust who says Pirates seriously considering Dylan Bundy with top pick.”
Bundy is a right-handed high school pitcher from Oklahoma. He could potentially be a third basemen because of how well he hits, but is being scouted as a pitcher. His fastball is generally in the 92-98 mph range while his curveball is well above average at about 76-78 mph.

According to scouts, his changeup needs work.
There is no possible way that Bundy should be selected with the No. 1 pick in the draft. There is no question that he could be a great player, but there is too much risk in taking a high school pitcher in the first round two years in a row.
Pittsburgh took Jameson Taillon with the second overall pick last season, which was the clear choice. They also took Stetson Allie with their second-round selection, a high school pitcher from Ohio.
High school pitchers usually take much longer than position players to get to the big leagues. The Pirates have their “core” position players up now—they need quality contribution as soon as possible.
That is why I would select Rice third basemen Anthony Rendon. They need another power bat in their lineup, and he also could have a quicker arrival to the big leagues.
