New York Yankees: Double Standard in the Evil Empire

Rick WeinerMay 11, 2011

Less then two weeks ago, a rather loud segment of Yankee nation was in a frenzy, screaming at the top of their lungs:

"Jeter is done! The captain is finished!"

Since writing this, Jeter has proceeded to hit .344 with three extra base hits, four RBI and five runs scored.

Perhaps not a total resurrection, but surely signs of life.

This was Derek Jeter we were talking about—you remember, the one guy who's heart you never questioned. The one guy who was as "true" a Yankee as humanly possible.

That meant nothing. Jeter was attacked from all corners of Yankee Stadium.

Which brings us to Alex Rodriguez.

A-Rod, who many claimed would never be a "true" Yankee, has not had an extra base hit since April 28th.

Since then, A-Rod is hitting .181 with three RBI and 11 strikeouts.

He must be done. He's got to be done. I mean how is it possible that he could rebound from such a putrid showing?

Before you say it, let me say it for you: "Jeter's older then A-Rod, he's closer to the end, he's coming off of his worst statistical season. You can't compare the two."

Yeah, heard that before. But A-Rod is no spring chicken either.

So, I ask—WHERE is the panic over and trashing of A-Rod?

I'm sorry, what was that? I didn't hear you clearly. Can you speak up?

Did you say A-Rod is just in a slump?

How is that possible? These are professional athletes. They must perform every night. There is no such thing as a slump.

If he can't hit, he's done. Right?

You may be asking what my point is. My point is simple: There's a double standard at work here.

Panic and chaos ensues when "Mr. Yankee" starts off slow; dead silence when a "hired gun" performs just as poorly.

Makes you wonder.
