College Football 2011: The 10 Most Lopsided in-State Rivalries
In the world of college football, there are rivalries across the country that are so evenly competitive between two programs that the winner of the yearly matchup is a toss-up of who will walk with bragging rights for the next year.
Then you will have rivalry games that take no expert analysis or some mind-numbing pregame show to see that the outcome is going to go to the team that has won 15 straight games and 24 of the past 25 years against the team across the state.
With that, let's take a look at some of the rivalries that have the residents of certain states not looking forward to the big games if they're sitting in the visiting section.
Virginia/Virginia Tech
1 of 10
Overall Series Record: Virginia Tech 50-32-5
Current Streak: Virginia Tech won previous seven
While the Cavaliers started this rivalry as the top program in the Commonwealth State, Virginia Tech turned the corner in becoming a solid program in the early 1950s, as Virginia went on the decline having its most success against the Hokies from 1987-1989 when they took three straight games.
Oklahoma/Oklahoma State
2 of 10
Overall Series Record: Oklahoma 76-16-7
Current Streak: Oklahoma won previous eight
Besides the instances of Oklahoma State winning two games in a row on five separate occasions, the Oklahoma Sooners have made the series known as Bedlam seem more like boredom with the dominance of the Cowboys making the Sooner State nickname have a little more meaning in this rivalry series.
Tennessee/Vanderbilt
3 of 10
Overall Series Record: Tennessee 72-24-4
Current Streak: Tennessee won previous five
Even with the Volunteers being in a bit of rebuilding process in Knoxville, Vanderbilt still hasn't been able to capitalize on the chance to steal some new fans away in the state of Tennessee, as the Commodores have only won once in the past 27 years while members of the SEC and that was with aid from former quarterback Jay Cutler in 2005.
Utah/Utah State
4 of 10
Overall Series Record: Utah 70-27-4
Current Streak: Utah won previous 12
As the Aggies had a good deal of success against the Utes in the 1960s and into the early 1970s, Utah has pretty much dominated Utah State in the decades before and after that streak, claiming 22 victories in the past 25 games as the Battle of the Brothers has been rather one-sided over the years.
LSU/Tulane
5 of 10
Overall Series Record: LSU 63-20-7
Current Streak: LSU won previous 18
While Tulane ended the home-and-home series with LSU early in the 2009 season, the Green Wave probably made a very wise decision in cutting the slate of games short since the Tigers have won 22 of the previous 25 games between games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge and the Superdome in New Orleans.
Iowa/Iowa State
6 of 10
Overall Series Record: Iowa 37-16
Current Streak: Iowa won previous three
The Hawkeyes should just keep the Cy-Hawk Trophy, the main rivalry trophy, at Iowa's football facilities in Iowa City permanently, as the team has dominated the series with long winning streaks of five, six and 15 games against Iowa State since the first meeting in October 1894.
Clemson/South Carolina
7 of 10
Overall Series Record: Clemson 61-38-4
Current Streak: South Carolina won previous two
Clemson has been able to hold down the Palmetto State in their rivalry series against South Carolina as the Gamecocks' longest winning streak against the Tigers since the first meeting in 1896 is a five-game winning streak from 1949 through the 1954 season with a tie in the 1950.
Michigan/Michigan State
8 of 10
Overall Series Record: Michigan 67-31-5
Current Streak: Michigan State won previous three
Even with a bit of sunshine on the win column for Michigan State with three straight wins entering 2011, Michigan has dominated their Big Ten rival over the course of history with long winning streaks and gaining conference championships against the Spartans since the two programs first met in the late 1890s.
West Virginia/Marshall
9 of 10
Overall Series Record: West Virginia 9-0
Current Streak: WVU won previous nine
With the exception of the 2010 overtime classic in Huntington, West Virginia has owned the Thundering Herd since their first meeting in 1914 as the Mountaineers have won every meeting on the field, most notably outscoring Marshall by a combined score of 193-6 in the first three meetings in this series.
Texas/Texas A&M
10 of 10
Overall Series Record: Texas 75-37-5
Current Streak: Texas A&m won the most previous meeting last season
Of the many in-state rivalry that the University of Texas has with those programs in the Lone Star State, the series with Texas A&M would have to be the most historic, but with even a great deal of coverage, the Aggies have been dominated by Longhorns.
