2011 NFL Draft Results: 5 Picks Who Will Be Biggest Studs of the 2011 NFL Draft

Donald WoodApr 30, 2011

The 2011 NFL Draft is on its last day and the casual fans have turned the programming off by now.

People won’t know a lot of these late-round picks, but these are the picks that can make a franchise great, just ask Tom Brady and Bill Belichick about the value of sixth-round picks.

With two solid days of drafting down, it’s all ready review time for analyzing these players with their new teams.

Some of the best players in this draft will end up with terrible teams and they will never fulfill their potential.

The following slideshow is of the five players that are going to be the biggest studs of this draft. Enjoy!

5. Casey Matthews, LB, Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles had questions on both sides of the ball and have had drafted a solid squad this year.

Players like Baylor offensive lineman Danny Watkins and Temple safety Jaiquawn Jarrett will come in and fill serious needs for the team.

The Eagles best selection of the draft weekend was picking Oregon linebacker Casey Matthews in the fourth round.

Matthews is the younger brother of star linebacker and Super Bowl champion Clay Matthews and comes from a long bloodline of NFL pros.

Matthews will come into the Eagles organization and be considered one of the top candidates to start at either inside or outside linebacker in the Eagles 4-3 scheme.

4. Nick Fairley, DT, Detroit Lions

If you didn’t see the first round of this year’s draft, you missed a pretty exciting round. One moment that actually made me say "wow" was when the Detroit Lions took Nick Fairley.

The Lions took Fairley at No. 13 overall in the first round. That doesn’t seem impressive on its own, but when you look that he was expected to go at No. 1 at one point, it was a steal.

Now the Lions will put Fairley, who had questions about his work ethic surrounding him, next to last year’s No. 2 pick, Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowler Ndamukong Suh and workout maniac Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Those two players and the Detroit coaching staff will get the most out of Nick Fairley and make him bring his A-game every play.

3. Anthony Castonzo, OL, Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are going to pay perennial Pro Bowl quarterback Peyton Manning more money than any other player in NFL history.

With that large of an investment, the Colts had to get some protection for him and bring some youth to their offensive line.

They achieved both with stellar Boston College offensive lineman Anthony Castonzo. He is a big player who plays anywhere on the offensive line the teams asks him to.

Castonzo is a smart player that was projected to go earlier in the first round, but slipped to Indianapolis at No. 22.

That is a steal for a possible 10-12-year starter.

2. Muhammad Wilkerson, DL, New York Jets

I got to see Temple University defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson play and looking at where he landed with the New York Jets, it’s the perfect fit.

Wilkerson is one of the smarter athletes in this draft and can handle any of the crazy schemes Rex Ryan and the Jets can throw at him.

While Temple played 4-3 and 3-4, Wilkerson always seemed more comfortable at 3-4 end, but had great success as an end and tackle in the 4-3.

New York can put him anywhere on their line and have a solid run blocker and a stellar end to create and come around the edge.

1. J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans

The Houston Texans made the best offseason move of any team so far. It’s not a player either.

When the Texans signed defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, they made a hard point that they would turn around what was the one of the worst defense in the league last season.

Phillips found the ultimate companion for defensive end Mario Williams in Wisconsin end J.J. Watt.

Watt has the relentless quality you want from your defensive end, but he is so much more than that. He can shed blocks and get after the running back and can drop into coverage when they blitz.

Watt will help the porous secondary with his pass rushing ability and the Texans will get themselves some help in the secondary as well.
