2011 NFL Draft: 7 Round Mock for Eagles (With Trades)
With many draft picks, the Eagles have a great chance to make an impact in the draft.
There are multiple needs across the defense and along the offensive line for Andy Reid, Howie Roseman, and Co. to answer.
It is a shame free agency may not happen before the draft, because that would have been a great opportunity to fill a couple of needs.
With the CBA, the Eagles cannot trade their best asset in Kevin Kolb, who would warrant a top 15 draft pick.
Look for Kolb to be moved for 2012 picks.
So, here is a 7 round mock draft:
Round 1: TRADE
1 of 12
I have the Eagles trading down with the San Francisco 49ers:
Eagles receive: 49ers second round pick (#45 overall), fourth round pick (#108 overall), and 2012 first round pick
49ers receive: Eagles first round pick (#23 overall)
The Eagles would be receiving a mid second round pick in a fairly deep draft and can secure an extra first round pick in 2012. The Niners may want to trade up in the first to have a chance to draft their franchise quarterback, before other teams looking to trade in the bottom of the first.
Round 2 Pick 45: CB Ras I-Dowling
2 of 12
Ras-I Dowling of Virginia was supposed to be a first-round prospect if he declared for last year's draft.
But in his senior season, Dowling struggled mightily and dealt with lingering injuries the entire season causing him to miss nine games.
Dowling is a big corner who could translate to safety at the next level. He is 6'2", 210 pounds and could be a steal in the second round
Though he bites for pump fakes, he is a solid cover corner and is great against the run.
Dowling recorded eight interceptions from his freshman to junior season.
The more I watch of Dowling, the more I see a top 15 pick. He has all the physical tools and can develop into a physical complement to Asante Samuel.
I think Jimmy Smith is a better corner between the two, but only by a hair. Dowling at 45 presents huge value for the Eagles.
Round 2 Pick 54: OG/C: Rodney Hudson
3 of 12
Hudson is quick and get move laterally. The Eagles like their offensive lineman sometimes to pull, so Hudson could be a nice fit on the offensive line at guard.
He also brings added versatility, as he can kick out to center.
Hudson has long been regarded as one of the better offensive linemen in college football. However, he played at only around 280 pounds for most of his career. He needed to add more weight to prove that he could be effective at the next level, which he did. Hudson measured in at 6’2″, 299 pounds at the combine, to improve his stock.
He plays with good awareness and technique, and rarely gets beat on bull rushes.
Hudson is a Howard Mudd type of an offensive lineman.
Round 3: TRADE: Pick 70: LB Bruce Carter
4 of 12
Eagles receive: Browns third round pick (#70 overall)
Browns receive: Eagles fourth round pick (#103 overall) and both fifth round picks (#146 and 150)
Carter may be the best weakside linebacker prospect in this draft, even though he did not play most of last season.
He is a fluid athlete that can cover sideline to sideline, making him one of the better fits for the Eagles' quick, aggressive defense.
Carter would have been a first round pick, had he played this season.
Carter's instincts are great and he is able to read and react quicker than most linebackers in the draft.
His injury may scare a few teams off, but he could be a second-round steal for the Eagles, who desperately need a playmaking linebacker.
Round 3 Pick 85: OT/OG James Carpenter
5 of 12
Carpenter is mocked from as early as the second to as late as the fifth round.
Carpenter has good quickness and is very good in pass protection, and is pretty solid in run blocking. Sometimes he could even reach the 2nd and 3rd lines of defense in run blocking.
Carpenter paved holes for elite running backs like Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson.
The 6'4'', 320-pound tackle can play guard as well and is more than a depth pick, as he could be an opening day starter at right tackle or guard.
Round 4 Pick 108: SS DeAndre McDaniel
6 of 12
McDaniel seems to be falling, especially with his character concerns.
He is a big hitter in the secondary and is solid enough in coverage, though most would not characterize that as his best asset.
McDaniel is 6'1'' and 217 pounds and ran in the mid 4.6's at the Combine.
Though you would like him to be faster, McDaniel can impact the defense with his bone-crushing hits.
He would be a capable complement to the faster, coverage safety Nate Allen.
If anything, he could be a solid depth player for a safety group lacking a hard hitter.
Round 4 Pick 119: DE Dontay Moch
7 of 12
You want to talk about an athletic freak, then you must talk about Moch, the most athletic player in the 2011 Draft.
Moch runs in the 4.4's in the 40-yard dash, which is especially impressive for a 6-3, 248 pound defensive end.
I think the Eagles will have to address defensive line with their mid-round picks.
Adam Caplan, who knows the Eagles very well, feels the Eagles will spend a pick on a hybrid defensive end, a description Moch certainly fits.
Moch had 64 tackles, nine sacks and one forced fumble.
Round 5: TRADE: RB Taiwan Jones
8 of 12
I had the Eagles trading both their fifth round picks in a trade with the Browns, leaving them without a fifth round pick.
Eagles receive: Vikings fifth round pick (#150 overall)
Vikings receive: Eagles 2012 fourth round pick
Jones is a real sleeper running back in the draft. He reportedly runs in the 4.3's and plays with great explosiveness.
Jones is a great receiver out of the backfield, something the Eagles look for in their running backs.
He could serve as the team's primary backup, if Jerome Harrison leaves in free agency.
Round 7 Pick 227: QB Tyrod Taylor
9 of 12
Since the Pat White experiment failed in Miami, Taylor's value will severely decrease.
Taylor has a decent arm, even though he has horrid accuracy. He is a playmaker on the move and can extend plays.
The Eagles have the best quarterback groomers in the league in Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg, and if they see potential in him, Taylor is worth a shot with a seventh round pick.
Round 7 Pick 237: LB Eric Gordon
10 of 12
While Greg Jones gets all the hype, Gordon may have been Michigan State's most consistent linebacker.
Gordon is 6'0'' 233 pounds and could be a nice depth pick for the Eagles linebacking core. Gordon played all three linebacking positions at MSU, so he provides versatility.
At worst, Gordon becomes a special teams star.
Gordon recorded 92 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception in his senior campaign.
Round 7 Pick 240: DT David Carter
11 of 12
In his first year starting, the 6'5'', 305-pound defensive tackle recorded 41 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble while missing two games on the season.
Carter is athletic for a 300-plus pounder. He is solid in pursuit and can take on double teams.
Because of his long arms and length Carter can play the run well.
Conclusion
12 of 12
Eagles would receive a 2012 first round pick from the 49ers, but lose a fourth round pick in 2012 to the Vikings.
Round 2: CB Ras I-Dowling
Round 2: OG/C Rodney Hudson
Round 3: LB Bruce Carter
Round 3: OT/OG James Carpenter
Round 4: SS DeAndre McDaniel
Round 4: DE Dontay Moch
Round 5: RB Taiwan Jones
Round 7: QB Tyrod Taylor
Round 7: LB Eric Gordon
Round 7: DT David Carter
