NFL Draft 2011: Cincinnati Bengals Confirm Cam Newton Visit
The Cincinnati Bengals played host to a very familiar guest this week in Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.
The Bengals have seen their fair share of Newton over the past month or so, and it has been confirmed that Newton repaid them with a trip to the Queen City on Monday.
Newton is making the final rounds on his tour of NFL teams before the April 28-30 draft.
After his visit to Cincinnati, Newton is set to visit the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, the Washington Redskins on Friday and the Denver Broncos on April 18.
However, it is unlikely that Newton will still be available when the Bengals are on the clock with the fourth overall pick in this month's NFL Draft.
Rumblings across the NFL over the past few weeks have suggested that the Carolina Panthers will select him first overall. The Broncos, who hold the second pick, are also highly interested in Newton.
Despite their slim chances of drafting the Auburn star, it's no secret that the Bengals have interest in him.
Head coach Marvin Lewis and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden surfaced at Auburn's pro day on March 8 and privately worked out Newton on Auburn's campus last Monday.
Lewis raved about the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner last week.
“He’s a really fine NFL prospect,” Lewis said. “He’s got a great, great personality.”
There has been a sea of controversy surrounding Newton since questions emerged about his father attempting to sell his services to Mississippi State.
Concerns of character issues also arose during Newton's short tenure at the University of Florida, where he was arrested for the alleged theft of a laptop computer that belonged to a student at the university.
Foxsports.com also reported that Newton chose to leave the University of Florida after the fall semester in 2008, rather than facing suspension or expulsion in part because of three instances of academic cheating.
Lewis, however, seems to have no issues with the issues surrounding Newton and calls his personality "magnetic."
Lewis added, “He’s run through some adversity, some created, some created around him and some self-inflicted at times. Some inflicted by the environment and some made up,” Lewis said. “Whatever it is, he’s been successful.”
Newton has become one of the more polarizing figures in all of sports for both his heroics on the field and controversy that has followed him off of it.
