College Football Recruiting 2011: The Top Offensive Position Classes in the SEC
With the 2011 recruiting class getting ready for spring break and senior prom, soon it will be getting on time for them to begin to prepare for their freshman season in college. For observers and fans this means that it will be time to preview again who is coming onto their favorite program's roster.
With this series, we will try out a rankings system for your favorite school and conference, based on position signings. For this first edition, we will rank the top offensive classes in 2011 recruiting, beginning of course with the top dog conference: the SEC.
Who had the best QB class? WR? Come find out!
Top OL CLass: Auburn
1 of 5
I went with the Tigers here slightly over Alabama. I like the depth that Auburn has a bit more than Alabama, even though the Tide got the top OL prospect in the nation, in Cyrus Kouandjio. Aaron Douglas may be the best JUCO lineman in the country and toss in solid prospects like Ryan Kelly and Ike Luatua and you see why Tide fans will be upset with me for having them second.
But Auburn signed a great center in Reese Dismukes, a great guard in Greg Robinson and perhaps the top right tackle in the country in Christian Westerman. All three of them are among the top 100 overall prep players in the country. Then add in Thomas O'Reilly and you have four potential OL starters.
Auburn may be a bit green this year in the trenches, so these recruits may find themselves on the two-deep as true freshmen.
Top TE Class: South Carolina
2 of 5
This was a South Carolina Gamecock kind of year for tight ends in the SEC. If you've been following my board for the 2011 class, then you know I think highly of Jay Rome, and Georgia signing him alone could have given them the top class.
But Steve Spurrier got Jerrell Adams, Rory Adams and Drew Owens all in class. Adams could find himself at receiver or defensive end, or just tack on girth to his 200 pound frame and stay at TE. Adams and Owens are both 6'5", and have large strike zones and length.
This could be a special class if all three are developed right.
Top WR Class: Ole Miss
3 of 5
Finishing second was LSU, as Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham are both terrific prospects and will be the Tiger flanks speed, quickness and RAC ability for the future. Yet Houston Nutt pulled a coup for the Rebels, signing three fantastic receivers.
Nickolass Brassell, Tobias Singleton and Donte Moncrief are three excellent players who could develop into an amazing speedy trio in the future. Moncrief has great size at 6'2". Brassell is a playmaker on the edges and Singleton is also 6'2", with 4.4 speed. Collins Moore is also slated to join them.
Top RB Class: Auburn
4 of 5
This was a tough class to decide, as Florida got a great back in Mike Blakely, but I love Weis and Muschamp adding Hunter Joyer, a fullback they need immediately on the roster as they move towards a traditional pro style offense. Then Georgia got Isaiah Crowell, who could be the top back in the country aside from Malcolm Brown of Texas.
Alabama signed Dee Hart, and of course Brent Calloway could indeed find himself in the backfield instead of the linebacker.
Yet Auburn won out again with signing both Quan Bray and Tre Mason. Bray is the sleeker, speedier back at 5'11", 178 pounds. He has great wiggle in the open field and could be a great receiving back. Mason has a bit more every down size at 5'11", 190 pounds and has the ability to factor on the edges and in between the tackles.
Top QB Class: Florida
5 of 5
LSU got two great QB prospects, and one in Zach Mettenberger that I think can start right away. Stephen Rivers has great size at 6'6", and could be a nice developmental player down the road for the Tigers. I like Georgia's signing of a proven inner in Christian LeMay and Auburn getting Kiehl Frazier is huge.
Yet this was a no brainer: Florida has the top incoming QB class in the SEC hands down. When you sign two QBs that are among the top 75 players in the country, and one is the top QB prospect in the class, you're in good shape.
I think Jeff Driskel is the toast of the QB class in the 2011 cycle, and Jacoby Brissett is an elite player as well. Florida has two QBs going forward to develop into top level starters, which is why they have the top QB class in 2011.
