NASCAR Nationwide at Fontana: Leaders Busch-Whacked by a Thief

Sandra MacWattersMar 26, 2011

The two fastest cars that battled for a win most of the race were beaten by Kyle Busch as he stole a win during the last pit stop with 13 laps remaining.

His crew chief called for four tires but only took two right side tires, and his driver took the lead never looking back at the frustrated drivers who wished they were in Victory Circle.

Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick had the fastest cars, and Busch really did have a third place car in the Royal Purple 300 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

Busch continues on his role to set records as he wins his 46th Nationwide race. Mark Martin holds the records of 50 wins in the series.

Five of the past six NASCAR Nationwide races at this track have been won by Busch including the last three. At age 25, his statistics are remarkable considering the time frame he has been in the sport.

Edwards finished second, Harvick third, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was fourth and Elliott Sadler completed the top five. Stenhouse Jr. now leads the point standings.

The absence of sponsors were evident even on the two Roush Fenway Racing cars of Edwards and Stenhouse Jr.

The California weather had been cooler than usual, but with clouds drifting away, the race finished in conditions that would have been pleasant for the fans, but the crowd was sparse.

The track at Fontana is getting reallly rough, and it was quite the sight to see the sturdy front fascias of the cars bouncing along on the track.

Busch swept both races at Bristol and looks to be running well in the Cup series. Could it be the driver of the No. 18 M&Ms Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing could steal another win at Fontana?
