Lane Johnson Announces Shocking Retirement During 14th NFL Season, Won 2 Super Bowls with Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles legend and offensive lineman Lane Johnson is retiring.

Johnson took to social media Tuesday to announce his decision, which he called an "incredibly difficult" one.

"I deeply wanted to gut it out for one more year; to take the field with my brothers for one last season," he wrote. "But after a lot of reflection, I've realized that my personal and family priorities in my life have changed.

"Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health. I owe it to my teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans to have my head and heart 100 percent in the game. And right now my heart is telling me that it's time to say goodbye to football."

The Eagles reacted to the two-time Super Bowl champion's decision in what was his 14th season with the franchise:

Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie released a statement that called Johnson "an all-time Eagle and one of the best players ever to play his position in the NFL."

He also recognized Johnson for his contributions to the community and ended by saying, "We appreciate everything Lane has contributed to our organization, and we wish him and his family nothing but the best."

This comes after Johnson was a late scratch from Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams because of personal reasons.

Philadelphia is scheduled to fly to London on Friday for its upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and will now need Markel Bell to fill in at right tackle moving forward. Philadelphia selected Bell out of Miami with a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

This is a golden opportunity for the rookie to start for a presumed playoff contender, although it is also a high-pressure one. He is being tasked with replacing a franchise legend and ideally keeping the offense afloat enough to bounce back from two straight losses.

As for Johnson, he surpassed even the highest of expectations that were put in place when the Eagles selected him with the No. 4 overall pick of the 2013 NFL draft.

His resume includes the two Super Bowl titles, two First-Team All-Pro selections and six Pro Bowl nods. He started 171 games for the NFC East team over his 14 seasons and remained effective well into his career.

In fact, he was a Pro Bowler and Second-Team All-Pro nod as recently as the 2024 campaign.

Johnson will forever be an Eagles legend and is certainly someone who could find himself in Canton, Ohio, one day as a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

But his retirement is an abrupt one in the middle of a season where he had returned to start for the Eagles. They will have to adjust on the fly against the Jaguars and the rest of their upcoming opponents as they look to battle for an NFC East crown.
