Mitch's Week Six College Football Picks: Part One
I stand at 59-52-1, even after the wreckage of what many people know better as last weekend.
Obviously I'm not where I want to be, but I'm not really more than a good week or two away from 60 percent either. I've had seasons where I've started in the hole before and ended up having great years, so in that case I'm ahead. I think it's time to put that all behind me and move on to the future.
We have a great slate of games this week and wall-to-wall action starting on Tuesday and going all the way until Saturday. Like last week, I'll be doing at least a pick in the form of my free newsletter. If you've already signed up, you are all set. If you haven't, it's very easy, and you get a free copy of my book instantly.
With all of that being said, we have a busy week ahead. As I know from experience, a lot of the experts will be gone, so it just makes it more ground for me to cover and fewer places for you to go with your questions, but I'll do the best I can and together we should come up with some solid information.
Let's get started on Part One for Week Six.
Middle Tennessee State -3 Vs. Florida Atlantic (Tuesday, Sept. 30, 8 EST): 1 Unit
Not a game that jumps off the paper at me, but since it's a Tuesday night special I'll give it a go.
If this game was the season opener I wouldn't have thought twice about it and would have been all over Florida Atlantic, but a funny thing happened on the way to Week Six. Florida Atlantic has been less than impressive against stepped-up competition, and MTSU, while certainly not a world-beater, has been a little better in my book.
I hate to point to a single player, but I think that whether it be the competition or another circumstance, Rusty Smith (four TDs, five INTs) has not gotten off to the start he needed to in order to make FAU competitive on a national level.
Middle Tennessee beat a Maryland team who is a lot better than most thought they would be and held their own against Kentucky, but they still sit at 1-3 overall.
The Blue Raiders return home after two on the road, while the Owls play their third consecutive game on the road. Both teams come off a bye week, and FAU is 1-5 against the spread following their last six bye weeks, while MTSU is 4-1 against the spread following their last five bye weeks.
Both teams are strong when facing a team with a losing record, with the Owls going 7-3 against the spread and the Blue Raiders going 6-1-1 against the number in the same situation.
This sets up to be a higher scoring game, and Middle Tennessee turns the ball over less and has a little better defense. With the spread being just three, I'll take the Blue Raiders.
