New York Knicks: Do They Have Any Chance of Bringing Back Gallinari or Chandler?

Sam SiegelMar 24, 2011

The blockbuster deal that sent Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks a few weeks ago got the city of New York excited about Knicks basketball again.

However, things haven't been going so well for the Knicks since the trade.

Since bringing Carmelo to the Knicks, the team is 7-10 and 1-6 against teams under .500.

They are struggling. However, I think it's pretty understandable.

Carmelo and Billups had to make a huge transition to New York and learn Mike D'Antoni's great offense. They're just getting used to it.

In my mind, I wouldn't panic.

Eventually, I think the chemistry will develop between the new big three, and I think they can make a little bit of noise in the playoffs.

Can they beat either Chicago, Boston or Miami? Probably not, but it will be a good series.

In the blockbuster trade, the Knicks had to send four starters to Denver in Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov—all of them were huge contributors to the Knicks' success this season.

Felton and Chandler were having career years, while Danilo Gallinari was developing into the player we all thought he would eventually become; Mozgov started to get his game going before the trade also.

However, here's an interesting thought: Wilson Chandler's contract expires next year and the Knicks may be calling.

There's just one question, will the new collective bargaining agreement get in the way of re-signing Chandler? Or, would the Nuggets look to re-sign him?

Who knows what could happen.

It may be intriguing for Chandler to play alongside Stat and 'Melo, and maybe Chris Paul in 2012. That would be a championship-caliber team, as long as the Knicks sign a true center to go with them.

Danilo Gallinari was also having an outstanding year this year. He was averaging 15 points with the Knickerbockers and really started to blossom this year. He's been playing great with Denver also and it seems like the fans love him there.

His contract expires in 2012, along with CP3's contract. Would the Knicks be able to sign both of them?

It's a mystery, but it's definitely possible. It depends on how the new collective bargaining agreement turns out.

Here's another interesting thought: Chauncey Billups' contract expires next year as well. He makes $13 million a year and that could leave the Knicks with some nice cap space at the end of next year.

I'd love to have Danilo Gallinari and/or Wilson Chandler back with the Knicks. They were great for this team. The Knicks would have a much improved team if they bring back either one of them.
