New Jonathan Taylor Trade Rumors on NFL Teams' Stance on Colts' Asking Price at 2026 Deadline
Six days away from the NFL trade deadline, the Indianapolis Colts are in a good position to potentially get the value they want for Jonathan Taylor if they decided to move their star running back.
Per ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler, the Colts continue to have a high asking price for Taylor and "enough teams" are interested that they don't yet have to think about lowering their demands.
According to Fowler, the feeling among NFL executives is the Colts could be holding out for the "equivalent" value of a first-round pick.
Fowler added the execs believe Taylor is worth a second-round selection plus an additional pick, with one AFC executive quoted as saying the Colts "want a bunch" right now.
Graziano cited the New York Giants as a team he "wouldn't be a surprised" if they were the one that made the move for Taylor. The Minnesota Vikings are another team that has frequently been connected to running backs, including Taylor, leading up to the trade deadline.
Using the standard NFL draft trade value chart, the lowest value for a first-round pick at No. 32 is 590 points. The Giants' second- and third-round selections have a combined value of 610 points, which would slot between picks No. 30 and 31 in terms of value.
The closest parallel to Taylor is the Christian McCaffrey trade to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. San Francisco gave the Carolina Panthers a second-, third- and fourth-round pick in 2023 and a fifth-rounder in 2024.
McCaffrey was in his age-26 season at the time, but had only played 10 games in the previous two years combined due to injuries. Taylor is in his age-27 season and hasn't missed a game since Week 7 of the 2024 campaign.
With the Colts embracing their need to rebuild, they are in a tricky spot with Taylor. Trading Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner last week made sense because both players were over the age of 30 and in the final season of their current contracts, making it less likely they would be brought back.
Taylor just signed a two-year extension in August that runs through the 2028 season, so in theory the Colts could rebuild their roster to be back in playoff contention sooner than later.
Complicating the situation, though, is the Colts don't control their first-round pick in the upcoming draft as a result of the Sauce Gardner trade. Based on the current standings, their pick would be No. 4 overall going to the New York Jets.
