WWE Memory Lane: Ranking the 10 Best PPV Matches of 1999 (Attitude Era)
This is the second slideshow of a short series I intend to create ranking top WWE PPV matches for each year during the late 90s and the early 2000s.
This one will focus on the best PPV matches during 1999, which is one of my favorite years in WWE history as a fan.
Whether it was the Austin-Rock feud early in the year or the Game's move to the main stage, '99 had plenty of big storylines and even bigger matches.
As with the previous slideshow in the series, please be sure to leave comments mentioning any matches that I forgot or didn't make my final list, or if you like would to discuss of any of these all-time great matches.
If you enjoyed this slideshow, be sure to check out some others in the series:
10. Shane McMahon vs. Test (SummerSlam)
1 of 10These two did battle in a "Love Her or Leave Her" match as Test was battling for the right to marry Shane's sister Stephanie McMahon.
Even though Shane had the help of his buddies from the Mean Street Posse, Test still picked up the victory in this one.
Although Shane-O-Mac definitely had some bigger spots in some of his later matches, his leaping elbow drop from the top of the ring post onto Test through the announce table was still a great highlight.
9. Rock vs. Mankind (Royal Rumble)
2 of 10This was a classic match in the Rock-Mankind feud and one my personal favorites of this group.
Both wrestlers destroyed each other, and the Rock picked yet another controversial championship win, much like he did at the Survivor Series a few months prior.
When the Rock asked Foley if he quit, a voice sounding like Mankind, but obviously not belonging to him screamed, "I quit," thus ending the bout.
8. Mankind vs. Triple H vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (SummerSlam)
3 of 10Since this event was taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jesse Ventura made a special appearance to serve as the guest referee in this main event.
While Mankind and Triple H formed an early partnership in attempt to take out Austin, that strategy soon eroded as it soon became every man for himself.
The finish saw Mankind stop a pedigree attempt by HHH on Austin, and then Foley finished the Rattlesnake with a double-arm DDT for the victory and the WWE Championship.
7. Six-Pack Challenge WWE Title Match (Unforgiven)
4 of 10
This match saw six of the WWE's best talents battling for the vacant World Championship in the main event.
Triple H walked out victorious over the Rock, Mankind, Kane, Big Show and the British Bulldog, with Stone Cold Steve Austin as an enforcer outside the ring.
Triple H was the champion who was forced to vacate the title in the first place.
6. Triple H vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (No Mercy)
5 of 10
Triple H received a little accidental help in this anything-goes matchup for the WWE World Championship.
The Rock came down to take revenge on the Game with a sledgehammer, but missed on his swing, taking out Austin instead.
Triple H landed a pedigree on the Rock before pinning Austin to retain his title.
5. Hardy Boyz vs. Edge & Christian (No Mercy)
6 of 10
This was the fifth match of a five-match series for $100,000 and the rights to have Terri Runnels as the winning team's manager.
In one of the best matches between these two great tag teams, both teams raised the bar for ladder matches while destroying each other in the process.
The Hardys eventually picked up the win in the best tag team match of the year.
4. Vince & Shane McMahon vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (King of the Ring)
7 of 10
This match was a handicap ladder match with the stipulation that if Austin could win, he would become the CEO of the WWE.
While seeing the Rattlesnake as the man running things would've been great, it just wasn't meant to be.
The McMahons won in this one, ending Austin's bid to become the boss in WWE.
3. Undertaker vs. Rock (King of the Ring)
8 of 10
The Deadman and the Rock had a memorable clash at KOTR with the WWE Championship on the line.
While this match wasn't the main event as Austin vs. Shane and Vince headlined the show, this was still a great bout between two of the biggest names in WWE history.
The Undertaker eventually retained his title over the Rock in a near 20-minute brawl.
2. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Undertaker (Fully Loaded)
9 of 10
This classic match was a First Blood match for Austin's WWE Championship.
The match had an added stipulation that if the Undertaker won, Austin would never compete for the World Championship again and if Austin won, then Vince McMahon was no longer allowed on WWE TV.
Austin retained his belt after an interference from X-Pac and Austin's use of a television camera to bloody the Deadman.
1. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Rock (WrestleMania XV)
10 of 10
This match headlined WrestleMania XV and was is one of the best main events in WrestleMania history in my opinion.
Despite Vince McMahon's best efforts to help the Rock retain his belt, Austin overcame both of them to become WWE Champion.
The night had a perfect ending, with Austin standing victorious over the boss holding his newly won belt.
