London 2012: Who Would Be in Team GB's Olympic Football Squad?
With the Olympics just over a year away now the schedule has been revealed for all of the events, with the men's football beginning just one day before the opening ceremony.
The rules of the football at the Olympics have very specific rules though as to who can take part. Players must be under 23 except three players who are allowed to be older.
While there is still uncertainty about which nations will allow their players to take part, for the purpose of this slideshow we shall say that all the home nations are taking part.
In this scenario, there must also be a fair quote from each nation, meaning a minimum of three players from each of the home nations.
Ben Amos
1 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Manchester United
Nationality: English
Reason: The young Manchester United goalkeeper has shown a lot of potential over the last few years and under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson he could well be good enough to represent Team GB at the Olympics.
Kyle Walker
2 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Right Back
Club: Aston Villa (on loan from Tottenham)
Nationality: England
Reason: The young right back has just earned his first England call up despite not being played in the match. He scored a screamer recently for Aston Villa and by 2012, could be more of a regular in the England set up.
Phil Jones
3 of 19
Age by 2012: 20
Position: Centre Back
Club: Blackburn Rovers
Nationality: English
Reason: The Blackburn centre back has already managed to hold down a first team place at the club at age 18 as well as having earned five call ups to the England under 21's already.
Danny Wilson
4 of 19
Age by 2012: 20
Position: Centre Back
Club: Liverpool
Nationality: Scotland
Reason: A regular in the Liverpool reserves set up since signing for the club in July 2010, Wilson looks set to achieve big things in his career. The Scottish centre back made 14 appearances in his one year as a professional at Rangers before making a move to Liverpool for a fee which could rise to £5m.
Gareth Bale
5 of 19
Age by 2012: 23
Position: Left Back
Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Nationality: Wales
Reason: Bale is one of the few players on this list who should not need any introduction. He would arguably be the most experienced player in the team if he were picked (excluding the few over 23's). He would also most likely be well rested with Wales looking unlikely to qualify for Euro 2012.
Marc Albrighton
6 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Right Midfield (can play left)
Club: Aston Villa
Nationality: England
Reason: One of England's brightest young talents, Marc Albrighton is already able to hold down a first team role at Aston Villa and is largely one of the teams key players. The young winger can also play on the left side of midfield which would also be seen as a good attribute to have in the squad.
Barry Bannan
7 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Centre Midfield
Club: Aston Villa
Nationality: Scotland
Reason: The young Scottish midfielder has already been on loan to Derby County and Blackpool from Aston Villa in an attempt to gain more first team football and has impressed in his time away from the club. Bannan has also already made 12 appearances for Villa as well as having earned two caps for the Scottish national team.
Jack Wilshere
8 of 19
Age by 2012: 20
Position: Midfield
Club: Arsenal
Nationality: England
Reason: Another player who should need little introduction, Wilshere is quickly becoming Arsenal and England's new midfield mastermind. Provided he lives up to his potential, which he seems to have done so far, Wilshere could be a key player in the Team GB squad, if he is allowed to play.
Aaron Ramsey
9 of 19
Age by 2012: 21
Position: Centre Midfield
Club: Cardiff City (on loan from Arsenal)
Nationality: Wales
Reason: Sadly the midfielder is probably best known for his horrific leg injury while playing for Arsenal, but the potential he showed before the incident was undeniable. Still struggling to come back to his best form, Ramsey may just be able to find his talent again in time for the Olympics. At his age, time is on his side.
John Fleck
10 of 19
Age by 2012: 20
Position: Left Midfield
Club: Rangers
Nationality: Scottish
Reason: John Fleck may not be a well known name but he has shown a lot of potential in his youth so far. Having made his debut for Rangers at just 15 years old, the midfielder (now 19) has already been compared to Wayne Rooney by his team mate Steven Whittaker due to his style of play.
Daniel Sturridge
11 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Striker
Club: Bolton Wanderers (on loan from Chelsea)
Nationality: English
Reason: Currently on loan at Bolton, Sturridge has scored three goals in his first three games at the club drawing the attention of many fans as well as Fabio Capello. Before his loan move Sturridge also made 26 appearances for Chelsea and 21 for Manchester City. The youngster has also played for England under 16's right through to the under 21's.
Conor Devlin
12 of 19
Age by 2012: 20
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Manchester United
Nationality: Northern Ireland
Reason: Devlin is another young Manchester United goalkeeper who has shown a lot of potential in his early years. Devlin has played in the youth teams of the Northern Ireland squad as well has being one of the key players in Manchester United youth's Milk Cup campaign last year.
Lee Hodson
13 of 19
Age by 2012: 20
Position: Right Defender
Club: Watford
Nationality: Northern Ireland (born in England but holds Northern Irish citizenship and has played for the country's youth teams)
Reason: The young Watford defender would count as a Northern Ireland player due to FIFA eligibility rules despite being born in Watford, England. He can play right across the defence although his best position is at right back. Hodson broke into the Watford first team recently and despite a slight drop in form he has still shown much potential.
Corry Evans
14 of 19
Age by 2012: 21 (Turns 22 during Olympics)
Position: Centre Back / Centre Midfield
Club: Hull City (on loan from Manchester United)
Nationality: Northern Ireland
Reason: Most players that are in the youth of a team like Manchester United must have relatively good potential and Evans is one of them. Currently on loan at Hull City, where he has made five appearances, Evans can play as a centre back or in central midfield making him a versatile enough player to possibly break into the Team GB squad.
Jordan Henderson
15 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Right Midfield
Club: Sunderland
Nationality: England
Reason: Having already earned his England debut, this Sunderland youngster is thought to be another one of England's future stars. Despite a slight dip in form recently, the player has been one of Sunderland's key players this season, assisting in many of the club's goals. Henderson has also made a number of appearances for England under 21's recently.
Joe Allen
16 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Centre Midfield
Club: Swansea City
Nationality: Wales
Reason: Another young Welsh midfielder who could be in the team GB squad, Joe Allen has already made his international debut like many other players in this list. Having earned 14 call ups to the Wales under 21's, Allen has also earned two call ups to the full Wales squad and looks to be another bright prospect for the future provided he can continue his development.
Danny Welbeck
17 of 19
Age by 2012: 21
Position: Striker
Club: Sunderland (on loan from Manchester United)
Nationality: England
Reason: Another Manchester United youth player, this time on loan at Sunderland, Welbeck has formed a solid partnership with Asamoah Gyan at Sunderland since the departure of Darren Bent to Aston Villa. Welbeck can also play as a winger, which will act in his favour, and has scored six goals in his 20 appearances for Sunderland so far.
Sam Vokes
18 of 19
Age by 2012: 22
Position: Striker
Club: Sheffield United (on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Nationality: Wales (Born in England but holds Welsh citizenship and has played for their youth teams)
