Liverpool FC Transfer Watch : Sylvain Marveaux Pre-Contract Agreed?

Abhijit RajaFeb 12, 2011

All the media attention currently focused on the revival of the Liverpool squad has been somewhat dampened by the draw against Wigan today.

Even in the transfer market, the media still has not gotten over the three record transfers involving Liverpool in the January window, with Fernando Torres going out and Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll coming in.

Amidst all this hype, everyone seems to forget that Liverpool is still undergoing a rebuilding phase and requires reinforcements in more than one department.

Almost everyone agrees that Liverpool lacks a decent winger since the departure of Luis Garcia. With Carroll on the squad now, the need for wingers is greater than ever.

Damien Comolli has expressed his admiration of Ashley Young openly, and Liverpool is expected to go all out for him in the summer.

However, another winger linked with Liverpool before the January transfer window was Sylvain Marveaux.

Marveaux has been at Rennes for about 10 years now. He has made over 100 first team appearances for the team, scoring 10 goals.

Sylvain is considered to be a very versatile midfielder, with ability to play both as an attacking midfielder as well as a central playmaker. However, he has found most success while being deployed as a left winger.

Most fans would agree that the left wing has been one of the weakest areas of the Liverpool attack, and a signing to fill that void is very necessary.

Marveaux could fill that void. He only has six months left on his contract at Rennes and has made it clear that he would not sign a new contract.

With a groin injury ruling him out for the rest of the season, he is not expected to play for Rennes again. Even the general manager of Rennes, Peter Dreossi announced, “We will never see Sylvain Marveaux in the jersey of Stade Rennais again."

Hence, the prospect of signing one of the most exciting talents on a Bosman alerted a lot of clubs including Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle.

However, Marveaux was believed to be preferring a move to Anfield. His attendance at Anfield for the match against Wolves in the beginning of January had led most people to believe that he is set to sign on the dotted line for Liverpool.

Then, no one heard about it for over a month and the possibility of another team beating Liverpool to the signing was becoming more and more likely.

But reports are now emerging that Comolli has just concluded talks and a pre-contract for Marveaux joining Liverpool in July has been agreed upon.

In times where players are selling for a fortune, singing a player on a Bosman is certainly an asset and the new owners would be extremely pleased with Comolli for the same as the money could now be invested in further strengthening the squad.

It is still believed that despite signing Marveaux, Liverpool would go for Ashley Young in the summer along with signings in defense (especially a left-back) and a central midfielder.

The transfer market dealing by the new owners has certainly given a ray of hope to the Liverpool fans, and if the Marveaux signing does turn out to be true, it would further strengthen the fans' belief on the new owners.
