Predicting The Arsenal Starting 11 For Their Match Against Wolves

Callum D'SouzaFeb 10, 2011

Arsenal will look to reinstate their presence back into World Football and diminish any living memory of their second half demise at Newcastle last week which saw the Gunners squander a 4-0 lead in the final 22 minutes.

Despite the North London giants enduring a horror draw, Arsene Wenger's men were actually able to shorten the gap between themselves and leaders Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson's men had their 24 unbeaten game streak eroded after a shocking 2-1 loss to Wolves.

The gap at the top is now only four points and United and Arsenal will be wary that they are both coming of embarrassing moments. At the south side of the EPL table, Wolves, who were in last place before their triumph over United, will look to enforce their form onto a wounded Arsenal.

The Gunners will aim to enforce their home advantage on Mick McCarthy's men with the game being played at the Emirates. Prior to the win against United, Wolverhampton hadn't succeeded in their last four EPL matches whilst Arsenal have been unbeaten in their last eight.

Wenger undoubtedly will be eager for the Gunners to bounce back strongly and regain their title credentials, the Frenchman would also admit that certain aspects lead to Arsenal second half demise and they can be easily avoided this time around.

After all the North London giants attacked impeccably in the first half, boasting four goals in 26 minutes and truth be told it should of been more. Furthermore the sending off of Abou Diaby and the injury of Johan Djourou were prominent features of Newcastle's comeback.

None the less let's predict Arsenal starting XI:

Goalkeeper

Polish shot stopper Lukasz Fabianski will miss the remainder after a persistent shoulder injury now requires surgery in Germany. Fabianski has not featured since early December, after taking over the first choice keeper reigns in October. This ensures boom youngster Wojceich Szczensy continues his impressive run at the front of the helm.

Despite conceding four against Newcastle, the Polish keeper had only conceded nine in eleven appearances this term. Experienced Spaniard Manuel Almunia will continue to deputize Szczensy.

Defenders

Arsenal defensive lines are frail as defensive leader Thomas Vermaelen is still continuing his agonizing absence after a persistent ankle injury sustained in August. Furthermore, enforcer Johan Djourou, who limped of against Newcastle last week, and has easily been Arsenal's best defender since December alongside forming a formidable partnership with Laurent Koscienly in the centre, is set to miss the match due to swollen knee.

At right back  Bacary Sagna will start, as the Frenchman will be suspended for the upcoming mid week UEFA Champions League Match with Barcelona. This ensures Ivorian Emmanuel Eboue receives a bench spot. In the centre the unreliable Sebastien Squillaci will be forced to start alongside Laurent Koscienly. The pair do not seem to partner well together and Wolves will look to target the frail centre.

On the left, English international Kieran Gibbs could receive a start as Wenger also looks to rest Gael Clichy for the mid week clash Barcelona.

Midfielders

After his famous yet admirable brain snap against Newcastle, Abou Diaby is suspended for three games and will miss the encounter. However the Gunners welcome back defensive midfielder Alexandre Song, who missed the Newcastle match through injury. Song will refill the defensive duties, whilst captain Cesc Fabregas leads from the front in the attacking role closely partnered by Jack Wilshere.

However Wilshere was forced to participate in England's 1-0 loss to Denmark, and the Frenchman may opt to utilize the fresh Samba star Denilson, who can cover a more defensive role to aid Alexandre Song.

French dynamo Samir Nasri is still out with a hamstring injury sustained at the end of January and is unlikely to feature against Barcelona.

Forwards

Last time these two sides met, Marouane Chamakh scored two decisive goals to give Arsenal a 2-0 victory. Expect Wenger to grant Dutch maestro Robin van Persie with a much needed rest, whilst Chamakh is elevated to the lone striker role.

English dynamo Theo Walcott, who has been in blistering form, is set to continue on the right, but Wenger will be eager to boast a fully fit Walcott at his disposal come the Barcelona encounter. On the left wing, Danish sharpshooter Nicklas Bendtner and Russian magician Andrei Arshavin will compete for the role with Bendtner likely to start with Arshavin used as an impact substitution late on.

Substitutes

There are seven places on Wenger's bench which should be vacated by Manuel Almunia as the deputy keeper, Defensive duo Emmanuel Eboue and Gael Clichy as the back defenders. Denilson and Jack Wilshere, depending on who starts will partner Czech Tomas Rosicky and Robin van Persie as well as Andrei Arshavin as the attackers.

In what should be a routine win for the Gunners, fans will hope it's nothing like last weeks mishap.
