College Football Line Moves for Week Four

Mitch WilsonSep 19, 2008

I'm glad I didn't touch last night's game and I truly enjoyed watching it anyway.

I think you guys know me well enough at this point to know I'm going to talk about Art Briles and Robert Griffin on the video today, so I won't gush over them here. I have seen teams lose games before that you know are just headed in the right direction and fast, and I will add the Baylor Bears to that list. All I can say is "wow."

We're in Week Four, and for a lot of people the season may feel like it's just started, but with all of the preparation and research I've done I'm about three-and-a-half months in. I have a good feel for the players and teams, though I've yet to been able to sit through more than just a few sentences of ESPN's Game Day or any studio show; am I missing anything?

Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather actually watch the games or spend any pregame spare time talking with you guys or over on Bleacher trying to convince the world that if they only believed what Baby Tate or I had to say about College Football in general, the game would be so much better for it.

Well, I have 21 games worth of picks against the spread working today, and you can find them all under the picks tab, so let's take a look at where the lines have gone on some of the games being played; in other words, let's look at how the public thinks things are going to work out.

Iowa-Pittsburgh

This line has inverted and Pittsburgh has gone from giving anywhere up to two points to getting one. As we say often, it's going to take a lot to put our money on a Wanny-coached team and one-point isn't going to make a difference, as I liked Iowa outright anyway.

Akron-Army

This has gone from Akron -7 to Akron -10. I like Akron -21 if that's what it was. Army stinks this year and has for a while, really.

Arizona-UCLA

Has gone from pick 'em to UCLA +3 1/2. While UCLA got whooped last week, I don't see them losing to Arizona at home. In case you haven't read the paper lately, the whole  Stoops thing in Arizona hasn't quite turned out like they had hoped a few years back.

UL Monroe-Tulane

The line has gone from Tulane -4 1/2 to Tulane -6. I was down on the Green Wave, but now think they may be one of the best winless teams around. I think Bob Toledo's team gets in the "W" column today.

Michigan State-Notre Dame

This line opened at ND getting 7, now they're +9 1/2. I guess I'm not the only one not buying into the whole ND is good this year talk.

Boise State-Oregon

This has gone from Oregon -13 1/2 to Oregon -10. I'm thinking that whole "Oregon is down to its fourth-string quarterback and only has a few on the bench" thing is kicking in really hard. This could be a fun one. The over/under is 53 1/2.

Virginia Tech-North Carolina

You don't see 5-point moves too often, but you have that here, as well as a line that inverted. VT was -1 1/2 when it opened, now they're +3 1/2. I know I don't always agree with everyone, but I took VT, so I guess I don't agree with anyone.

Rutgers-Navy

This has gone from Navy +3 to Navy +6. This goes to show you, when Duke looks unstoppable against you, the world takes notice. I always liked Navy, but not today.

Utah-Air Force

This line opened with Air Force getting 6 1/2 and now they're +9 1/2. Not sure what I'm missing? This series has been dominated by the home team, and Air Force has been untouchable against the spread. I can't figure it out. Help.

Vandy-Ole Miss

This one opened with Vandy +5 1/2, now they're +7. I couldn't figure it out then, and I still can't now. I care about the game, but I'm not taking sides.

South Florida-Florida International

Tough to call a 26-point line low, but that's what I thought when they opened this one. It's 29 now, and I think it could go even higher with a 5 p.m. EST kickoff.

There's still a lot of movement to take place today, as a lot of the games are later in the day, but these are just the ones that jump out at me. To be honest, I've seen the line moves get mixed results this year and over the years, so I'm just sticking to my picks. Good luck to all, and I'll be around and of course back tomorrow with my recap.
