National Signing Day 2011: Michigan and The 10 Schools With The Most To Prove
The day has finally arrived, National Signing Day, one of the biggest days of the year for college football fans. While many players have already madae verbal commitments to the schools they are planning on attending, some players including Isaiah Crowell wait until the big day to make their announcements.
With players like Crowell, Jadeveon Clowney, and Stephone Anthony still available, the ability to make or break your class is still present.
Now, to focus on ten teams that need to acquire a few more recruits today in order to make a splash in the college football world.
And check out where the Top 100 Recruits are headed.
Follow all of the National Signing Day action on Bleacher Report.
10. Alabama
1 of 10
Alabama is still in the running for the top two players available: Isaiah Crowell and Jadeveon Clowney. While Alabama doesn't need to land one of these players to have an elite class, landing one or both of these two players will likely secure them the top recruiting class.
Alabama is losing a lot of its playmakers on offense, including Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, and Greg McElroy so they have some holes to fill.
Just in case anyone forgot, Auburn won the National Championship last year so Alabama has something to prove to Gene Chizik, and that is that they are still the elite destination for top recruits.
9. Notre Dame
2 of 10
Brian Kelly turned in a solid recruiting class his first year in South Bend and is looking to turn in another solid class this year.
Notre Dame has been far from elite for quite some time and Brian Kelly may be the guy that can turn things around in Notre Dame.
Notre Dame is looking to have a top ten recruiting class and many people think this could be the year that their class actually lives up to the hype.
8. Florida
3 of 10
With Urban Meyer out of town, Florida may not have the draw that they have had over the past couple years. According to Rivals.com their recruiting class is currently ranked No. 19 and Scout.com has them even lower at No. 26, so Florida needs to add to that class.
Since Meyer left, Florida has only signed one top 100 recruit and has lost three that originally committed to Florida.
Curtis Grant and Stephone Anthony are all still in play, as well as a couple others, so it is possible for Florida to salvage this class.
7. Oregon
4 of 10
Coming off a BCS National Championship game appearance, Oregon coach Chip Kelly is looking to make just as big of a splash on National Signing Day.
Oregon and USC are going toe-to-toe for all the top recruits on the west coast, including five-star linebacker De'Anthony Thomas.
If Oregon can lure Thomas away from USC at the last minute, the tides may be turning to Oregon as the top market in the Pac-10, ahead of USC.
6. Auburn
5 of 10
After winning the BCS Championship, you wouldn't expect Auburn to have to prove much, however, they are losing their best player in Cam Newton and Alabama is looking to reload.
Auburn has been stealing recruits from both the Texas and Florida markets for the past few months and appear to be on a run, Auburn needs to consistently land these recruits to become a powerhouse, once again.
With Gabe Wright announcing his decision soon, Auburn fans will be celebrating as their team will field one of the elite recruiting classes.
5. USC
6 of 10
With Oregon winning the Pac-10 last year and USC hoping to have their probation lifted during the appeals process sometime this offseason, the Trojans need to have a solid signing day to remain afloat in the Pac-10.
USC has long been the destination of top players on the West Coast, however, Oregon has begun stealing many of these players from USC in recent years.
The De'Anthony Thomas decision looms largely on USC fans as we await his decision between Oregon and USC.
4. South Carolina
7 of 10
Steve Spurrier's team made a splash last year when it made it to the SEC Championship game, however one year does not make or break a program. Spurrier needs to build on the recruiting class that he had last year that featured Alshon Jeffrey and Marcus Lattimore.
With Jadeveon Clowney the No. 1 overall recruit still in play for South Carolina, they could land a very good class. Adding Clowney would speak numbers of how far South Carolina has come since the arrival of Steve Spurrier.
3. Florida State
8 of 10
Florida State may be regaining the recruiting edge that it had in the mid-90s in the state of Florida, as they appear to have landed a top five recruiting class.
While one of their top signing day recruits Tony Steward has signed with Clemson, Timmy Jernigan is still in play for them and Jernigan has already announced that Florida is out of the running, so expect Jernigan to land in Tallahassee.
Adding another two top 100 signings will secure Florida State with a top three recruiting class for head coach Jimbo Fisher.
2. Georgia
9 of 10
Mark Richt has started his day off as a happy man with star defensive end Ray Drew announcing that he would be headed to Georgia.
Georgia is having a very competitive year in the recruiting world, even against tough SEC competition. They currently have a top 15 class, and with the announcement that Drew would be heading to Georgia, they may have secured a top ten class.
If Isaiah Crowell announces that he will be headed to Georgia, this could end up being one of the best classes that Georgia has had in a while.
1. Michigan
10 of 10
Oh, how the mighty have fallen in Ann Arbor. One of the most prestigious college football programs in the county, Michigan has not only struggled to land top recruits, but also struggled to find their next head coach.
After Rich Rodriguez was shown the door, Harbaugh and Les Miles appeared to be the top two candidates on Michigan's wish list, and as we saw both of those guys turned the job down leaving Michigan scrambling for a new coach.
Chris Barnett (verbal to Arkansas) and Jake Fisher, two recruits that the Big Blue had hoped to land have announced previously that they will taking their talents elsewhere (Barnett's decision is still unofficial though).
To be fair, Hoke has done a better recruiting job than most of us have expected, but according to Rivals.com their class is only ranked No. 24, which won't make Michigan fans go crazy.
Hoke still has some work to do and is hoping to land Leilon Willingham and Darian Cooper before the day is over.
