College Football: Eight Teams Who Will Dominate and Eight Who Won't
There are eight teams that will dominate college football during the next ten years, and eight that might believe they have a chance but do not. Actually, there are more like 80 that think they might have a chance.
The eight I've listed are on the cusp of greatness and think they will be among the elite of college football, but they are not and will never make it to the top.
Texas Longhorns
1 of 16
The Texas Longhorns will dominate.
Not only in football, but in the race to see which University can haul in the most cash to lavishly spend on just about anything. In 2016, they will buy 51 percent of the stock in ABC/ESPN and air every game in every sport, every day in every state. There will even be a Longhorns booster club in Barrow, Alaska. They will appear in the BCS National Championship Game two times, but not until after Mack Brown retires or takes over as Athletic Director and not until they’ve drained the rest of the conference of any self esteem.
TCU Horned Frogs
2 of 16
The TCU Horned Frogs will not dominate.
Anything. They will continue to field a winning team, but most seasons, they will lose one or two they shouldn’t, and after that, nobody will care—sort of like it is now. Gary Patterson will eventually be hired by the Longhorns for $7,000,000 a year.
Florida Gators
3 of 16
The Florida Gators will dominate.
They will continue the winning ways of Urban Meyer, and in the next decade, they will be in BCS bowls six times, one of which will be the National Championship Game, likely in 2016, which they will win. Will Muschamp will prove to be a great hire, but it will take him at least three years to get the Gators back into the SEC Championship game. Tim Tebow will be hired as the quarterback coach in 2014, after he’s been out of the NFL for a year.
Auburn Tigers
4 of 16
Auburn Tigers will not dominate.
They will see a few bright years, but nothing that will say that they’re a truly elite team or that Gene Chizik is much more of a coach than he was at Iowa State. If Auburn was also located in Iowa, they might stand a chance to become the dominant team in their state. But being in the same state with the Crimson Tide means they will continue to be relegated to second fiddle in the eyes of ESPN and the rest of the nation.
If the NCAA/FBI have discovered all of the illegal activities that the Crimson Tide faithful swear the Tigers are engaged in, then Auburn will be banished from the face of the earth.
Alabama Crimson Tide
5 of 16
The Alabama Crimson Tide will dominate.
Their record against the Auburn Tigers will be 7-3, against LSU 7-3, against Tennessee 8-2. Nobody else will matter. They will also win the National Recruiting Championship three times and be in the top five every year but two. Nick Saban will sign a new contract for whatever amount he wants and for as many years as he wants. He will become the senior member of the SEC head coaches.
Ohio State Buckeyes
6 of 16
The Ohio State Buckeyes will dominate.
They will have at least eight wins in every season and average more. However, they will continue to struggle in bowl games.
Why? That’s a good question.
They will appear in the BCS National Championship Game twice and lose both times. Jim Tressel will retire in 2016 and donate his sweater vest to the Smithsonian to be placed on display right next to that of Mr. Rogers in his Neighborhood.
Wisconsin Badgers
7 of 16
The Wisconsin Badgers will not dominate.
Much like the Auburn Tigers, they will be good most years, but not great and will have a losing record against top 20 teams. Wisconsin is as good right now as they will ever be. Unfortunately for them, that’s just not quite good enough.
Coach Bret Bielema will interview for a vacant NFL job, but will not be chosen. He’ll eventually retire from Wisconsin and move to the Florida Keys, where he and Mike Leach will open a charter fishing service.
LSU Tigers
8 of 16
The LSU Tigers will dominate.
They will win a lot of games. Les Miles will get another contract extension and will eventually lose his Yankee accent, but he will never gain his wits about him. The only real problem the Bayou Bengals have is being in the SEC West. They will lose to Alabama more times than they win, but they will average nine wins a season. They will appear in the BCS National Championship game once and will win against Ohio State.
USC Trojans
9 of 16
The USC Trojans will dominate.
Sanctions are supposed to kill them, but Lane Kiffin will find a way to skirt the rules, and the very location of USC will be enough reason for a boatload of four and five-star recruits to make their way west. They will average eight to nine wins a season and get to the BCS National Championship game one time six years from now. They will win.
Oregon Ducks
10 of 16
The Oregon Ducks will not dominate.
They are now and will always be a good team, but they just don’t have the recruiting base to be strong year in and year out. In 2013, they will garner national attention when they take to the field wearing jerseys with actual duck feathers sewn onto their shoulders. Chip Kelly will leave for an NFL head coaching position, also in 2013, where he will succeed, especially against the Seattle Seahawks.
Oklahoma Sooners
11 of 16
The Oklahoma Sooners will dominate.
They will leave the Big 10 in 2014 when it dissolves and after they and Texas have won 90 percent of the games against their little sister conference opponents. The Sooners will get a rich TV deal, and they and the Longhorns will both become independents. Bob Stoops will leave in 2018 to take a job with the New York Jets, but the Sooners will hire an able replacement. It won’t be Nick Saban.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
12 of 16
The Nebraska Cornhuskers will not dominate.
It won’t matter what conference they are in; they just won’t have the players to be competitive with other dominant teams. They will average eight to nine wins a season, but they will not be able to get into BCS Championship Game. They will go to a bowl game nine years out of 10 and will win six of the nine.
Boise State Broncos
13 of 16
The Boise State Broncos will dominate
They will continue to suffer from location, location, location and an over-sized ego. They won’t be able to recruit with any consistency no matter how much money they spend on upgrading their facilities. In 2015, they will lobby to become a member in the PAC 10-12-14-16. They will be accepted with the stipulation that their football field will have to match the rest of the league’s playing surfaces. They readily agree, but later renege when they find out the rest of the league is not changing to blue turf.
Utah Utes
14 of 16
The Utah Utes will not dominate.
They are, right now, enjoying the best football that they will ever see from their team. They will win a lot more than they lose, but their schedule combined with their lack of a national following will doom them to second fiddle when it comes time for the votes to be cast for BCS games. They will play in four BCS bowls, but none of them will be for the big enchilada. They will lose three of the four of those BCS bowls, including a rematch with Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, which they will lose by 24 points.
Florida State
15 of 16
The Florida State Seminoles will dominate.
They will average nine wins or more per season and play for all the marbles one time where they will win. They will win the ACC championship five times, but will have a losing record against Florida. Jimbo Fisher will leave in 2016 to become the new head coach at Auburn—if Auburn is still in existence.
Penn State
16 of 16
The Penn State Nittany Lions will not dominate.
Coach Joe Paterno will finally retire after the 2013 season, but Penn State will struggle to win eight games in 2012 and 2013. Despite their great tradition, they’ll not be able to regain their place among the college elite. They will go to a bowl game every year, but only three of those will be BCS games. When Coach Paterno retires, Penn State will hire Mike Leach.
