National Signing Day 2011: Pitt Completes Busy Weekend by Signing 5

Matt ShetlerJan 30, 2011

Typically the weekend is a time to relax and unwind after a busy week of work.

Not for Pitt head coach Todd Graham and staff, who were hard at work hosting recruits.  For their effort, Graham and company have added another five names to this season’s class, bringing the total number of new recruits to enroll at the University of Pittsburgh to 14.

In addition to the Jason Frimpong commitment, which I reported yesterday, the other highlight of the weekend appears to be defensive end Devin Cook, who played locally at Beaver Falls High School.

Cook is listed by scout.com as a 3-star recruit and was one of the better defensive players in the WPIAL this season. He starred at middle linebacker and tight end in high school, but is expected to be converted into a pass rushing defensive end for the Panthers.

In addition to Cook, Graham continues to pull players from the state of Texas. This time he landed cornerback Lloyd Carrington out of Lincoln High School in Dallas, which has produced several Division I players the past few seasons.

Just like Frimpong, who committed the day before, Carrington is small but very fast. His best 40-time was clocked in the 4.40 range.

Pitt also added a safety in Stephen Williams. Williams is out of Savannah, Georgia and drew a bit of interest from both Auburn and Georgia Tech, although the Panthers were the only school to make an offer.

Graham didn’t ignore the offensive side of the ball, as he also landed wide receiver Ronald Jones from Fort Meade, Florida.

The common theme with all of Graham’s early recruits at the skilled positions is speed, which is something he initially promised. Jones is no different. He stands only 5”9, but runs a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash.

Finally, running back Jeremiah Bryson made his commitment to Pitt official.  He previously offered up a soft verbal to the Panthers.

The Panthers' overall numbers are starting to look better, even though they haven’t inked any top-notch recruits to date. One thing, though, looks to be for sure is that in the upcoming seasons, Pitt will be a much faster overall team.
