Strikeforce Video: Was Nick Diaz Yelling at Mayhem Miller After His Win?
Was Jason "Mayhem" Miller the target of Nick Diaz's post-fight antics at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg on Saturday night?
Diaz impressed again during his fight, defending his Welterweight title in exciting fashion again, submitting Cyborg with just seconds remaining in the second round.
But it was Diaz’s post-fight outburst that had the fans and Internet buzzing once again.
Controversy surrounded the Strikeforce Welterweight Champion once more as the fighter was seen yelling and flipping off someone outside the cage following his win over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos.
Members of Diaz’s corner had to pull him away from the fence more than once as he lashed out at his target and threw his mouth guard into the crowd.
Given the recent ugly history between the two, the initial reaction from fans was that the gestures must have been toward Strikeforce middleweight fighter Jason “Mayhem” Miller.
Miller and Diaz have been engaged in a media battle, each one claiming that the other does not want to fight, but both fighters refusing to budge on the weight they wish to have the fight at.
Another rumor quickly spread that Diaz may have been taunting Strikeforce Women’s 145-pound champion and wife of Diaz’s opponent, Cris “Cyborg” Santos.
Finally, a third rumor was started that Diaz’s antics were directed at current UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck who Diaz recently ripped apart in an interview.
Diaz was frustrated that Koscheck is ranked above him on many world welterweight rankings and took to demolishing Koscheck’s commitment to training as well as his skills.
After hours of speculation, Fanhouse’s Ariel Helwani caught up with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker and asked him about the incident.
Coker dismissed all of these rumors quickly, noting that it was in fact simply disruptive fans that were the target of Diaz’s tirade.
According to various reports from fans in attendance, a group of very vocal non-Diaz fans were hurling insults and screaming at Diaz and his corner both during and after the fight.
Coker admitted that he knew who the group of fans was but that was unaware of the actual individuals who were responsible for harassing the Diaz corner and eventually throwing a drink at Nick himself in the cage.
“I’ll have to look at the seating chart,” Coker said. “But I know the group that was a little bit unruly and, you know, maybe we won’t see them here anymore.”
In addition to his interview with Helwani, Coker also told ESPN that he thinks Diaz will be busy in 2011 and that he believes a fight with “Mayhem” Miller will eventually happen.
Diaz himself was interviewed by Helwani after the fight but would not comment on the incident.
