National Signing Day 2011: The Top Recruits Who Won't Honor Commitments
With National Signing Day just around the corner, let the drama begin. A signing-day switch is a common ordeal on NSD, and this year figures to be no different with some very talented and committed (but unsure) prospects still weighing their options.
While there are many recruits who stick to their word and honor commitments, some wake up on NSD with second thoughts, and by the end of the day, have signed with a different program. When you combine a teenager making a life-altering decision with factors such as football, distance, academics and families, there's bound to be uncertainty in decisions until they sign their letters of intent.
Let's check out some top prospects who won't honor their verbal pledges and will pull a switcheroo come National Signing Day.
5. Marcus Martin, USC
1 of 5
Martin is a big offensive guard prospect from Crenshaw (CA). He stands 6'3" and weighs nearly 360 pounds, yet the big man can move well for his size in short areas and has vast potential. He's a load and uses his girth and strength to effectively move defenders off their marks in the run game.
Martin, a teammate of 5-star ATH and USC commit DeAnthony Thomas, committed to the Trojans early in the process. Yet recently Martin has taken visits to Colorado and Arizona, as he has hit it off with the coaching staffs of both schools and is seriously looking at the Buffaloes and Wildcats.
Thomas, who has recently reaffirmed his pledge to Troy, will have a little work to do on Martin to ensure the pair continues playing together at USC.
4. Kent Turene, USC
2 of 5
Turene is a 6'3", 230-pound linebacker from Boyd Anderson high school in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. He committed to USC last summer and has tried to stay solid in his pledge, but Georgia just won't take no for an answer.
It's always a concern when a recruit who is slated to head off to a school far from home has a local school come on strong. Turene took a trip to Athens last weekend and spoke with former USC now turned Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones on his trip, who compared both schools. Turene will visit Texas Tech this weekend.
USC will have to get back to recruiting Turene like he's not committed to the Trojans, because right now he's acting like a prospect who's not.
3. Herschel Sims, Oklahoma State
3 of 5
Abilene (TX) running back Herschel Sims is a 5'10, 190-pound playmaker that has every school in the Midwest after his services.
Sims is currently committed to Oklahoma State, whom he pledged to last April, but rumors are swirling that Baylor is thick in the picture. Sims has tried to quiet rumors by telling his high school coach that he is 100 percent OSU, but rumors still persist.
Art Briles and the Bears will not rest on Sims until they get final word he has faxed his letter of intent to the Oklahoma State football offices.
2. Marcus Roberson, Texas Tech
4 of 5
Roberson hasn't been seen often at St. Thomas Aquinas lately. Since the season, he's been marching to the beat of his own drum. The talented defensive back, who is 6'1" and 170 pounds, has committed to Texas Tech in the meantime.
His uncle is Otis Mounds, who is on the Red Raiders staff. Roberson has stated his comfort level with his uncle was a big factor. Schools like Auburn, USC, Florida and Georgia simply don't care about that and are still hot after Roberson, who is still taking visits and is rethinking his commitment.
It was a huge coup for Texas Tech to even get Roberson to consider them, and another coup for him to commit. But the biggest coup for Tommy Tuberville will be to get Roberson's signed letter of intent faxed to Lubbock.
1. Jeoffrey Pagan, Clemson
5 of 5
Pagan is a DT/DE prospect from North Carolina who is 6'4" and weighs nearly 275 pounds. He's athletic enough to play strongside end and big enough to hold up at defensive tackle. He suffered a torn ACL injury this past season and is currently rehabbing.
Yet Pagan is still a big-time recruit and recently verbally committed to play at Clemson. Many felt his recruitment was over at that point, but reportedly moments after he announced his decision, Pagan began having second thoughts.
Now it looks like Georgia and Alabama are the front runners, with Tennessee also being considered. He's having so many conflicting thoughts now that Clemson actually expects to lose Pagan to another school. The Tigers will stay on him, but he looks as good as gone from Clemson.
