National Signing Day 2011: Where Are The 10 Fastest Blue Chip Recruits Headed?
Speed, speed and more speed. That's the name of the game and that is what college football coaches want and recruit. Explosion and burst are what many evaluators look for and if you notice, many of the top ranked players all have speed to spare.
This year has speed at all positions, including quarterback. While there are more than just 10 blue chippers who are speed demons, we'll rank the top 10 fastest top recruits in the country.
Let's race to it!
10. Devon Blackmon
1 of 10
Blackmon is headed to Oregon as a wide receiver and played a little quarterback during his senior year in high school.
Chip Kelly will use his new toy as a consistent deep threat as Blackmon has been timed at 4.4 in 40 on a 6'0", 17 pound frame. He has a great burst and explodes in release to eat up cushion defensive backs give him.
He showed off this speed during the Under Armour game, constantly finding himself behind the secondary of the nation's top corners and safeties.
9. Sheroid Evans
2 of 10
When you win both the 5A Class state 100 and 200 meter dash as a junior, then let's just say you're really fast. In fact, let's call you super fast. No wait, let's call you one of the very most fastest high school athletes in America.
It also just so happens that Sheroid Evans is a super talented cornerback headed to keep up with Big 12 receivers at Texas. The 6'1, 185 pounder likely will get a demand from the UT track coach to throw on his spikes and could be the best corner/track athlete at UT since Aaron Ross of the New York Giants.
8. Damian Swann
3 of 10
Swann's speed will get him looks as a receiver and return man, though he was recruited to Georgia as a defensive back.
At 6'0, 175 pounds and playing corner, he has the recovery speed to gamble and take chances like Asante Samuel of the Philadelphia Eagles. Swann can easily catch up to any receiver, but also has the hips and agility to mirror in coverage.
His speed will also let him factor as kickoff and punt returner.
7. Sammy Watkins
4 of 10
Watkins is probably the fastest receiver in the country. Watching him on tape, the first thing that pops out his release quickness off the line, how fast he eats up cushion, forces the corner to bail early and runs by an entire secondary.
He will be a deep threat from day one at Clemson and will score a lot of touchdowns and be on a lot of highlights. He's that fast.
He'll be an orange and purple blur during his days with the Tigers.
6. Victor Blackwell
5 of 10
Blackwell has been running by defensive backs in the LA area since he was a freshman at Mater Dei. He has been timed at 4.4 in the 40 yard dash and is a deep threat once he gets off the bus.
He's headed to USC, and at 6'0 and nearly 190 pounds, will line up at receiver for the Trojans. Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Kennedy Pola will certainly use his speed to get behind Pac-12 defenses.
USC will get even faster when Blackwell arrives on campus, and that's saying something at USC.
5. Amir Carlisle
6 of 10
Carlisle is a 5'10, 180 pound running back who just committed to USC. A member of the Rivals 100, Carlisle has speed to take the rock to the house anytime he touches the ball.
What also seperates Carlisle from others is his quick cutting ability. He can cut on a dime, never needs to gather and explodes in a new direction leaving would be tacklers with only air to grab.
He will be used as a do it all type player at USC who can line up at running back, slot receiver and return kicks. Also Trojan fans, don't shocked to see him line up in the Wildcat before he leaves Troy.
4. Isaiah Crowell
7 of 10
Crowell is a game breaker, yet he has big man size. His legs look like tree trunks which really add marvel to his overall speed and quickness. He's 5'11, 210 pounds but has legit 4.4 speed.
He can score from anywhere and has a great burst to and through holes as a running back. Seeing him on tape running by defenders makes it easier to understand why Georgia, Alabama and Auburn are all slugging it out for his services.
3. DeAnthony Thomas
8 of 10
Thomas is listed as an ATH and played quarterback, running back, safety, corner and returned kicks and punts for Crenshaw (CA).
While he's only 5'9" and 170 pounds, he will most likely become a corner at USC. He has been timed at 4.4 in the 40 and there are rumors that he has been timed at 4.3 a few times recently.
Lane Kiffin may be tempted to actually use this speed demon on offense rather than in coverage on defense.
2. Dee Hart
9 of 10
Hart has already enrolled at Alabama and Nick Saban will certainly welcome his speed. 5'8", 190 pounds, Hart showed off his speed at the Army All-American game, averaging around 7 yards per carry.
He can do it all and is most dangerous while in space with the ball. He reminds us of Eric Metcalf. Hart also is very strong for his size and a great receiver out of the backfield.
However he does it, look for Hart to use his speed anytime he can to score touchdowns in Tuscaloosa.
1. Mike Bellamy
10 of 10
Before we start, and you start debating and complaining, let me just say this top spot is a toss up. Anyone could take this spot any given day and it just so happens that Mike Bellamy take the top notch now.
Bellamy clearly has speed to wave goodbye at defenders and zoom away like the road runner running away from the coyote. His explosion has been compared to a stick of dynamite as he bursts everywhere on the field.
He can scoot and skate through holes, jump on top of linebackers, make defensive backs miss and pull away from an entire defense n route to pay dirt.
