Texas Tech Football: Complete Bio of New Defensive Coordinator Chad Glasgow

Amy DaughtersJan 24, 2011

Texas Tech officially announced Friday the hiring of Chad Glasgow as the Red Raiders new defensive coordinator.

Glasgow replaces James Willis who spent one season leading the Red Raider defense to a year end ranking of No. 93 out of the 120 teams in the FBS.

So, who is Chad Glasgow, and what does he bring to the Red Raiders’ defensive table?

Glasgow is 39-years-old and most recently served as TCU’s safeties coach; he was an original member of Gary Patterson’s staff at TCU.

Glasgow hails from Woodward Oklahoma and is no stranger to the Big 12 conference, having played linebacker at Oklahoma State where he was a three year letter earner and earned a degree in business administration in 1995.

Glasgow was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State and then New Mexico from 1994 – 1996; while at New Mexico Glasgow worked under Gary Patterson, who was then the Lobos defensive coordinator.

After New Mexico Glasgow spent one season (1997) as the linebackers coach at Illinois State before becoming the safeties coach at Southwest Texas State from 1998 to 2000.

Glasgow joined TCU’s staff during Gary Patterson’s first full season as head coach (2001).

The Horned Frogs were ranked No. 1 in total defense in five of the ten seasons that Glasgow had been on the defensive staff including the past three consecutive seasons.

Additionally, while at TCU Glasgow coached 14 All-Conference selection safeties, including four who have (in the past four years) gone on to sign NFL contracts.

Glasgow was named the 2010 National Defensive Backs Coach of the Year by Footballscoop.com.

TCU runs a 4-2-5 defensive scheme and it is not yet known if Glasgow will stay with the recently installed 3-4 defense that Tech ran in 2010 or if he will alter the scheme further.

One thing is for sure; Chad Glasgow will have his work cut out for him in reviving a Texas Tech defense that ranked No. 120 (or dead last) in pass defense in 2010.

Glasgow’s Horned Frog defensive backs ranked No. 1 in the nation this past season vs. the pass allowing only 126.3 yards per game vs. the Red Raiders last place ranking giving up 306.1 yards per game through the air.

In regards to his hiring of Glasgow, Tommy Tuberville stated (according to a statement released by Texas Tech), “It’s my goal to bring our defense to a championship level and Chad Glasgow is the right person for the job.  With his experience and knowledge of the game and recruiting, he will be a great addition to our staff.”

The Red Raider nation can hope that Chad Glasgow is indeed the “right person” to run a successful, swarming defense at Texas Tech University that results in playing at a “championship level.”
