Update: Junior Dos Santos Now Coaching Alongside Brock During TUF 13
The UFC heavyweight division just can't seem to catch a break. After multiple interim titles in the past, it seems as if the division will get another.
According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Junior Dos Santos will indeed be matched up in a title bout for the interim heavyweight title. Dos Santos was originally planned as the next challenger for newly minted heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, but that went downhill once Velasquez tore his rotators cup.
Since Velasquez could be out for up to a year, the UFC obviously felt that it was necessary to create another interim strap.
While names have already been thrown out as to who Dos Santos will be throwing down with, no one has been confirmed yet. With Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, and Brendan Schaub all lined up with fights it seems as if the only remaining options would be Brock Lesnar or Shane Carwin.
Lesnar and Carwin are both coming off of losses. Lesnar lost to Velasquez in an embarrassing bout at UFC 121 in which he looked totally outclassed for the entirety of the fight. Since then he has had little to no contact with UFC brass and has been rumored to be interested in leaving the organization for a return to professional wrestling.
Shane Carwin lost in his title bout to Lesnar at UFC 116, a bout in which he dominated the opening frame before coming out totally gassed in the second round. He has not fought since due to back surgery.

UPDATE: Junior Dos Santos will now be fighting Brock Lesnar after coaching against him on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter. It will not be for an interim belt, but the winner is guaranteed the next shot at champion Cain Velasquez.
The only difference between the planned interim fight and the newly planned one is the downgrade from five rounds to three. Although the fight probably wouldn't have gone five regardless.
