BCS Championship Game 2011: Auburn-Oregon a Championship-Level Disappointment

John SmithJan 10, 2011

To say that the game played between those two schools was bad would do a disservice to bad games.

The game played between these two top-ranked schools was nothing else but a disgrace to the game of college football and an embarrassment to championship-level competition.

Bad officiating, dropped catches, missed communication, bad coaching, terrible play calling, blown coverages, a terrible field, awful announcing and mistake-ridden all can be used to describe that game.

As a college football fan, I feel like a part of me was just ripped out. I feel bad for whomever paid money to watch that disgrace to the game of college football.

It wasn’t good defense, and it wasn’t even close. The offenses went out and put out the worst display of football I have ever seen.

I couldn’t count how many times I saw terrible throws from both Cam Newton and Darron Thomas.

That game was borderline unwatchable. I wanted to throw up at that poor display of football.

The two teams average 43 or more points a game, but combined for 41 points last night. Don’t tell me that was becase of good defense; it was because of dropped passes, missed assignments and bad throws.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to take anything away from Auburn University and its fans. But that game was terrible, and there are many reasons for this.

First, how can you expect a good game played between these two juggernauts after a 35-day layoff?

The NCAA says that there can’t be a playoff because of the players' educations, but Oregon began classes last week, and Auburn began classes the day of the title game.

If there was a playoff, this kind of sluggish play would not happen. Teams would come off playing two or three weeks in a row and have a rhythm.

Also, the 35-day layoff played a major impact on the sluggish performances of the offenses, which both rely on running at fast tempos.

Am I overreacting a little bit? Yes. But as a college football fan, I feel cheated and like a part of me was just ripped out.

I feel sick to my stomach from those teams' displays at the BCS National Championship.

Again, nothing against the Auburn Tigers, but that was the poorest display of championship-level football I have seen in a while.

The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs would have beaten either of those teams. They came out and played with pride in the Rose Bowl, and Oregon and Auburn embarrassed their Universities.

Meet my 2011 National Champion, the TCU Horned Frogs. A team that won without fault. A team and a program that are completely clean. A team and a university that deserves the title of National Champion.
