BCS National Championship 2011: 10 Teams Who Could Beat Oregon or Auburn

Andrew RobesonJan 10, 2011

When Auburn and Oregon face off on Monday night for the National Championship one will secure a No. 1 ranking in the final polls.

But I personally believe the champion will be one of the weakest in recent history.

Both have incredible offenses, but could a great defense have stopped them in their tracks?

Here are 10 teams who would have crushed either of these teams if they had faced off.

10. 1991 Washington Huskies

The '91 Washington Huskies were noted for their defense.

They only allowed 105 points, but played few ranked teams. One of those ranked teams was Michigan in the Rose Bowl, whom they beat by 20 points.

9. 1997 Michigan Wolverines

The 1997 Michigan Wolverines only allowed 9.5 points a game. Wow.

In a testament to their defense their offense had neither a 1000 yard rusher or a 500 yard receiver.

They were led by Heisman winner Charles Woodson. Oh and their third string quarterback was a guy named Tom Brady. Heard of him?

8. 2005 USC Trojans

This team actually lost a game, but that wouldn't stop them from beating Oregon or Auburn.

Their offense was one of the best ever, and prior to their loss they were considered to be in the discussion as one of college football's best of all time.

The team featured two Heisman winners in Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.

This team, led by Vince Young, scored more than 40 points in all but one of their games.

Their 652 points are an NCAA record. Their title game against USC is one of the more memorable ones of the last decade.

A total of 24 players from this team entered the NFL.

6. 1956 Oklahoma Sooners

5 of 10

This team recorded six shutouts.

While averaging 47 points a game.

Wow.

5. 1992 Alabama Crimson Tide

6 of 10

The 1992 Alabama team featured one of the best defenses of all time.

They only gave up more than 13 points on two occasions and held their opponents to just 122 points. Their defense would easily put a stop to the high powered offenses of Auburn and Oregon.

They defeated the No. 1 Miami Hurricanes in the Sugar Bowl by picking off Heisman winner Gino Toretta three times. What would they do to Cam Newton?

4. 1988 Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The 1988 Notre Dame Fighting Irish unseated the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams on their way to their No. 1 ranking.

When a school has 10 national championships and one team is considered their best, well you know they were pretty darn good.

This team ended a 36-game winning streak by the University of Miami and won 10 of their 12 games by double digits.

3. 1999 Florida State Seminoles

The Florida State Seminoles began the 1999 season ranked No. 1, and finished it the same way, making them the first team to be ranked No. 1 from wire-to-wire.

They featured Heisman winner Chris Weinke at quarterback and Peter Warrick was his main target.

The team really shined on defense where they only allowed 203 points all season long. During the season they defeated both the No. 2 and No. 3 teams at the time they played them.

2. 2001 Miami Hurricanes

The 2001 Miami Hurricanes were dominant.

They held eight of their opponents to a touchdown or less, and stifled Heisman winner Eric Crouch in the national championship.

The team was led by Ken Dorsey, Clinton Portis, Jeremy Shockey and Andre Johnson on offense, and Ed Reed and Jonathan Vilma on defense.

1. 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers

The 1995 Cornhuskers are widely regarded as the best team in college football history.

Their closest game was a 14-point victory against Washington State.

The Huskers were known for having a dominant defense and great rushing attack.
