2011 Under Armour High School All-America Game: The 10 Biggest Surprises
The Under Armour All-American Game took place in St. Petersburg, Florida on Wednesday and there was a slew of surprises with verbal commitments being announced, plays on the field, zingers on the sidelines, and one crazy finish.
There were many surprising elements to the night, so come check out the top 10 surprises during the game!
10. Kiehl Frazier Bouncing Back From a Slow Start
1 of 10
Frazier came in for relief duty during the latter part of the first half and looked a bit rocky upon first glance.
As the night wore on, Frazier settled in for the Red team and began making plays, including a deep touchdown pass the Eli Rodgers.
9. Eli Rogers' Big Catch
2 of 10
Rodgers shook off an early drop in he first half to come back and make some plays.
Many receivers would have chosen to go in the tank after a drop, especially in such a big game on a big stage. Rogers bounced back and went on to display his speed on a deep catch from Kiel Frazier.
8. Isaiah Crowell's Leg Size
3 of 10
Isaiah Crowell has been known for his speed and game breaking ability. At 210 pounds, to possess speed like Crowell's is remarkable, but we forget about his leg strength and drive.
Crowell has the power to push piles between tackles...while still burning defenders in the open field.
7. HaSean Clinton-Dix's Quiet Game
4 of 10
Throughout the week, we had heard how well Clinton-Dix and Williams were performing in practices.
While Williams transferred his play to the game, Clinton-Dix surprisingly wasn't heard from much, if at all during the game.
6. James Vaughters' Productivity
5 of 10
Vaughters tracked the Red team running backs all night and rustled up 5 stops in the box on the defensive side for the White squad.
Whether Jim Harbaugh stays or bolts, Vaughters has the makings to be a great linebacker on The Farm.
5. Anthony Chickillo
6 of 10
The White team seemed focused on blocking Jadeveon Clowney. Anthony Chickillo made them pay.
Chickillo was a menace off the edge, and active all over the field, including a fumble recovery in the first half, and sack in the third quarter.
4. Karlos Williams Lining Up at Punt Returner
7 of 10
We knew what kind of athlete Williams was, and the fact of him being 6-2, and 210 pounds makes his athletic ability that much more impressive.
Williams lining up and returning a punt in the second quarter was an added surprise to his allure.
Then came the pick-six return that turned heads...
3. Max Wittek's Poise
8 of 10
Playing against top competition in high school certainly has helped Wittek not become rattled under pressure.
While the UA Game is pretty much a college football game, talent wise, one would think a QB with a new offense, receivers, and Jadeveon Clowney starring at him would be just a bit uneasy.
Wittek was poised and calm early on, completing passes on time and in rhythm.
2. Jeff Driskel's Mobility
9 of 10
Jeff Driskel's athleticism was a surprise as he's 6-4, over 230 pounds and displayed great mobility to escape the rush and quickness to get outside the pocket to deliver the football.
He capped it off with a 63 yard touchdown scamper to pay dirt.
While Charlie Weis will be his coordinator in college, Driskel still would have been a great fit in Urban Meyer's spread option offense.
1. Mooch
10 of 10
We all knew that Red team head coach Steve Mariucci possessed some comic relief abilities, as we've heard and seen with his stops in San Francisco and Detroit.
But Mooch was on fire on the sidelines during the game and his light hearted one liners had players, officials, and even commentators in laughter throughout the game.
