BCS National Championship: 15 Reasons We're Glad It's on ESPN, Not FOX
BCS National Championship is finally here. Well, sort of. The game is still five days away. But the fact that the two teams have taken to the practice field on Wednesday reminds me that the game is right around the corner.
There is a lot to like about this game. There will be two teams on the field that boast high octane offenses. There will be touchdowns and highlights a-plenty. We will also get to see the best in the game, Cam Newton, take to the field.
But all of this pails in comparison to the joyous news that ESPN is covering the game, not the eyesore known as FOX.
Here is what has me all fat and giggly, besides the nachos.
15. Erin Andrews
1 of 15
There really is little else to look forward to after Erin Andrews. In fact, January 10th will have me watching the game for a several reasons. The best and brightest are:
1. It's a title game
2. Erin Andrews
3. I am a college football fan
These are listed in order of importance and I feel as though I still shortchanged the lovely Ms. Andrews.
14. ESPN 3
2 of 15
Now you can get the BCS title game via live streaming on ESPN 3, so if you are stuck at work or away from a television, you can still get the game via the web.
And that, my friends, is a very good thing.
13. Cletus
3 of 15
That there would be Cletus. You can bet that if the BCS game was on Fox, we would be subject to Cletus roughly every thirty seconds.
He would come with a reminder about the NFL playoffs and how they are on Fox. But really, he is just there to constantly annoy me, like Mark Jackson trying to make sense during an NBA game.
12. FOX Overlays
4 of 15
Fox loves graphics. To them, it is the greatest invention in all of the world. Whenever I watch anything Fox produced, I am subjected to a cavalcade of overlays and graphics.
The onslaught on your eyes continues throughout the game. Every once in a while you get a chance to peer through one of the majestic graphical gems and notice that, "Hey, there is a game going on under there."
11. FOX Is NFL
5 of 15
Every once in a while, Fox gets their mitts all over a huge college game. And then we quickly realize they are an NFL broadcast booth.
Sure, Fox has great college commentators. They perform superbly on the regional coverage. But there is really no one of note that consistently does it on a national stage for Fox.
ESPN does it week in and out. They know the feel and pace of the game.
ESPN just does college better.
10. Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson on FOX
6 of 15
This is what we would again be subjected to in the studio during the BCS title game. I am all for knowledgeable personnel, but I can't relate to the meanderings of two old farts that mumble over each other.
I would much rather turn off the television for 15 minutes than be subjected to another minute of Jimmy Johnson yelling at me.
9. Thom Brennaman on FOX
7 of 15
In 2009, we were reminded by Thom Brennaman how great a person Tim Tebow was. He took every opportunity to gloss Tebow as the second coming.
I can only imagine that if Fox had the rights this season, Thom Brennaman would pick a new favorite. We would then be forced to hear how great Cam Newton is or what LaMichael James might be thinking while playing with such talent.
I am surprised he took time to actually call the game.
8. American Idol
8 of 15
I understand that everyone on the planet loves this show. I, for one, was over it from the first note being sung on season one.
But that is not why I have this show listed. It is because you can bet Fox would have a commercial, or overlay, telling us when this show would air all throughout the broadcast.
Does anyone on earth besides me not know when this show airs?
7. Lou Holtz
9 of 15
Everyone loves Lou Holtz.
What is not to like? He is extremely knowledgeable. He is not afraid to speak his mind. But most of all, he is just delightful.
He talks to you like a grandfather would to his family. Granted his talks center on college football, but still, you get my point.
6. Brent Musberger
10 of 15
Old "Mush Mouth" is a favorite of mine. He is a welcome comfort for college football games. Just as the top teams are continuously changed and reformed, his voice remains a constant throughout the ages.
It is a comfort to know that we will be treated with the same phrases this decade that he has been using every decade since he started.
"You are looking live at..."
"Pardner..."
"Folks..."
"In the college game..."
These are just a few select beauties you can expect on January 10th.
5. Kirk Herbstreit
11 of 15
If there was someone as knowledgeable about college football as Jay Glazer or Adam Schefter are about the NFL, it would be Kirk Herbstreit.
Herbstreit brings a knowledge to the broadcast booth that sadly, the Fox Network just cannot duplicate for college football. It also adds intrigue when Erin Andrews rumors surface. It is also scintillating when he starts calling out players as he did with Terrelle Pryor.
4. Erin Andrews
12 of 15
I think this argument bears repeating. Erin Andrews rules the sidelines with an iron fist. There is no one that can compare to the gravitas she brings to sideline reporting.
She is hot too.
3. Lee Corso
13 of 15
There is no one better at being out there than Lee Corso. You never know quite what you will get when he is on TV. He may ramble on incoherently or he may drop a bomb as he did in this video.
The man is over-the-top, but passionate. You cannot disagree that at the very least he is entertaining. There are many pregame shows that you can miss, but you cannot miss one with Lee Corso.
2. Spectacle Over Substance
14 of 15
Every network wants to sell you on their coverage. They want you to believe that you are watching the best thing ever.
But Fox has a knack for going over board. Fox would steer more towards the spectacle and celebration of the moment. ESPN is all about breaking down the game and dissecting what went right and what went wrong.
ESPN just gets sports fans.
1. ESPN Is Sports
15 of 15
Fox has a great deal of money and power, but they are spread too thin when it comes to sports. They are an entertainment channel, a news outlet and lastly a sports destination.
ESPN, on the other hand, is all sports. That is their bread and butter. There is just no way anyone can compete with the monolith that is the "four letter."
