5-Star LB Tony Steward Cancels Visit to Alabama This Weekend, May Visit Florida
5-star linebacker Tony Steward, one of the top overall prospects in the country, was scheduled to make an official visit to Alabama this weekend before he plays in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday.
It appears Steward has scratched that from his plans. According to a tweet from ESPN recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg, Steward's head coach at Pedro Menendez High School, Keith Cromwell, has said that Steward will not be making his trip to Tuscaloosa, but Alabama is still in the mix.
No further information is available at this time as to the reasoning behind Steward's decision not to make the trip or if he plans to reschedule for a later date.
Steward already has official visits scheduled with Florida State on January 21 and Clemson on January 28; he visited UCLA on December 10.
While those three schools are his top choices, Alabama, Auburn and Florida are still vying for the coveted linebacker's services as well.
Steward had an official visit scheduled with Florida in December but cancelled after head coach Urban Meyer stepped down. He then decided to visit Auburn instead but due to personal issues was forced to cancel that visit also.
New Gators head coach Will Muschamp, who previously served as the defensive coordinator at Texas, appears to have convinced Steward not to eliminate Florida from the equation just yet though.
Newberg also tweeted that Muschamp met with Steward today, and it looks like he may be making a mid-week official visit to Gainesville.
With so much on his plate at this point, it wouldn't be surprising to see Alabama and Auburn get lost in the shuffle. Steward plans on making his college decision on National Signing Day on February 2.
With most observers pegging this as a two-horse race between Florida State and Clemson if Alabama and Auburn were to fail to get official visits, the slim chances either school has of signing Steward would essentially be out the window.
