5-Star OT Christian Westerman: 10 Reasons He'll Sign With USC
In the recruiting saga of 5-Star offensive lineman Christian Westerman of Chandler (AZ), he's gone from a devoutly solid Texas commitment, to wavering, to solid to Texas again, to then looking at Auburn, to now scheduled to visit USC on January 13th.
Longhorn fans are still confident that Westerman will stick to initial pledge to come to Austin, but we're going to give you 10 reasons that Westerman bolts for Troy come Signing Day.
Let's start now before Westerman changes his mind...again.
10. Chance To Help Rejuvenate USC
1 of 10
For the past two seasons, including Pete Carroll's final season, USC has not enjoyed the sheer dominance it held for so long throughout the decade.
While Lane Kiffin and Trojan fans have expressed some disappointment in this past season, with some creative recruiting classes and ways to stack the roster, USC has a very good chance to get back on top in the coming years.
What better for Westerman than be a key recruit in a class that has the potential to help restore USC back to prominence?
9. The NFL
2 of 10
USC is keenly known as a must see for NFL scouts all year long.
In the Spring, almost every NFL GM, coach, and scout make the trek to Southern California for the annual USC NFL Pro Day.
Westerman is a 5-star recruit with NFL potential, he could parlay his tenure at USC into becoming a NFL draft selection.
8. Chance To Compete Against Arizona & Arizona State
3 of 10
Westerman is from Arizona and doesn't seem too big on staying in-state to play for the Wildcats or Sun Devils.
Coming to USC would afford him the chance to regularly compete against both schools in the new Pac-12.
7. Matt Barkley
4 of 10
Pete Carroll was not the only person to just be flat out mesmerized by Matt Barkley's appeal, allure, and legend. Many teammates love the Trojan quarterback, evidenced by him being voted captain in just his true Sophomore season.
Barkley is a natural leader, and became the de facto spokesman for the program during the Carroll to Kiffin coaching change. Players flock to Barkley, and why not help protect a legend if you're Westerman?
6. USC's Offensive Linemen With Recent NFL Success
5 of 10
There have been many great offensive linemen to walk through Heritage Hall in the history of Trojan football. From Anthony Munoz all the way to Lenny Vandermade.
Recent times have seen the likes of Sam Baker, Duece Lutui, and Ryan Kalil become successful NFL starters via the USC program. Kris O'Dowd and Tyrod Smith look to be next. Westerman could follow.
5. Tradition Of Troy
6 of 10
USC probably is the most storied college football program west of Oklahoma and Texas and among the very most appealing in the country.
The Cardinal and Gold, the Heismans, past head coaches, All-Americans, National titles, legendary players, the Coliseum, and Heritage Hall all are vital traditions.
Don't forget about the Song Girls, too.
4. USC's Talent Level
7 of 10
Make no bones about it, though USC has fallen back to the pack (no pun intended), there is still a boat load of talent stocked on the Trojans roster.
A running joke among players in the program during the past 8 years has been they face better competition and talent everyday in practice than they constantly do during games.
Why not sign up to not only play on a talent laden team, but to get better everyday by going up against top notch talent in practice if you're Westerman?
3. Chance To Live and Play In Los Angeles
8 of 10
Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States, and the fans are crazy about USC football.
Players are treated like kings around town, and it's routinely noted that there is no NFL team in the market which allows the Trojans to dominate headlines.
Westerman could be to be in awe of the weather, women, beaches, lifestyle, and attention of the city of Los Angeles.
2. Lane Kiffin & Ed Oregeron
9 of 10
Kiffin and Oregeron were the two main cogs in the recruiting machine that was USC in the middle portion of this decade.
They recruit, coach, recruit, coach, and recruit. They even compete with one another on who can land the most players for USC.
It seems usually when Kiffin and Oregeron go after a player hard, they land him, and they want Westerman...bad.
1. Chance To Start As a True Freshman
10 of 10
It's no secret the stout desire of offensive linemen USC needs in this recruiting class. Tyrod Smith has declared for the NFL, Kris O'Dowd is graduating and the depth chart is bare.
Westerman has the tenacity, size, strength, and overall skill set to come in, challenge Kevin Graf at right tackle and bookend the pocket with current left tackle Matt Kalil to protect Matt Barkley, immediately.
This certainly has to be a draw for him to yell out Fight On.
