Revolving Door: Who Should Replace Haywood/Wannstedt at Pitt
It seems like just a couple weeks ago we were in this same position. Former Miami (OH) coach and now former Pitt coach Mike Haywood was fired yesterday after a being arrested for a felony battery charge. He was just two weeks on the job, making it what I'm pretty sure is the shortest coaching tenure ever for a head coach.
Now Pitt needs to begin another search for it's vacant head coaching position. Here is a list of some candidates that could take over for Haywood.
Jim Harbaugh
1 of 12
A highly unlikely choice, but still an option. Harbaugh turned the Stanford Cardinals from a PAC 10 laughing stock into a BCS team. He brought in recruits and kept the players under control.
However, it is highly unlikely that he goes to Pitt.
Rich Rodriguez

This is assuming that he is fired from Michigan.
He is not the choice that I would have picked. Rich Rod failed at Michigan, and I can't see his spread-option offense catching on very well at Pitt.
However, he did succeed in the Big East with his time at West Virginia.
Josh McDaniels

Why not?
He knows offense. He can coach an NFL team, just not run one. At college, that will be different. QB recruits would pour in to be coached by McDaniels, to get that edge at the next level. He could develop the two young quarterbacks that they have right now and bring Pitt back into BCS talks.
Jeff Jagodzinski
4 of 12
Jagodzinski was a good coach. He went 20-8 in his two years at Boston College before being fired. And the only reason why he was fired was because he interviewed for the New York Jets job.
After spending some time out of coaching, Jagodzinski went to the UFL and coached the expansion team, the Omaha Nighthawks.
An experienced coach that knows both sides of the ball, Jagodzinski could own this job.
Brian Schottenheimer

Schottenheime, the current offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, would also be a good fit for Pitt. He knows the offense well and has developed Drew Brees and Mark Sanchez into great quarterbacks.
And being the understudy of Rex Ryan, Schottenheimer would make a great head coach.
But with the Jets' offense playing poorly in the last couple of weeks, many have called for Schottenheimer to be fired. That mostly likely means he will not get an NFL job anytime soon.
So why not do what Jim Harbaugh did and go to the collegiate level for awhile?
John Fox
6 of 12
Fox won't be returning to Carolina next year, which leaves him out of a job. Fox was not a bad coach at all. He just had a GM that made bad moves and couldn't help his team win.
Fox is a complete coach that can run both the offense and defense well. Let's not forget that Fox lead the Panthers to the Super Bowl back in 2003.
The man can coach and would fit well at Pitt with his experience.
Paul Chryst
7 of 12
Paul Chryst has to be one of the best offensive minds in college football today. If Montee Ball had rushed for four more yards, the Badgers would have had three 1000 yard rushers in one season. That's something.
While coaching for only 21 years, Chryst still has experience and his offense scored 19 points against a TCU team that averaged only 12 a game.
And in 2003 when he was with the Beavers, his team had a 4,000 yard passer, 1,500 yard rusher and two 1,000 yard receivers.
While Texas is pursuing him for an offensive coordinator job, Pitt should pursue him for a head coaching job.
Bud Foster
8 of 12
For the past 15 years, Bud Foster has lead the Hokies' defense. In all 15 of those years, the defense has been one of the top in the country, reaching that rank in 2005 and 2006.
Foster brings a great defensive mind and experience to the Panthers. He has garnered Head Coaching interest before and should be considered for the position at Pitt.
With Holgorsen going to West Virginia and TCU coming into the Big East next year, Pitt needs to start developing a defense to keep up with these teams. Foster can do that.
Marvin Lewis
9 of 12
Pitt has reportedly added Marvin Lewis to their short list.
Marvin Lewis has turned down contract extensions due to upgrades that he wants made, but have not or will not be done by the Bengals.
Going 58-65-1 in 8 years with the Bengals with 2 winning season. Marvin Lewis is one of the brightest defensive minds in the game however and would bring a load of experience to Pitt.
Ralph Friedgen
10 of 12
Friedgen is the current ACC Coach of the Year and turned the Maryland football program into an ACC contender. Why the University of Maryland tried to get rid of him still stumps me.
He could be a great pick-up for the Panthers.
Mike Leach
11 of 12
Mike Leach is a successful coach. He took a BIG 12 Laughing stock team in Texas Tech and turned them into a BCS Team. He revolutionized the game with his Air Raid offense.
The fact is is that Leach is good at fixing programs and developing quarterbacks.
Tom Bradley
12 of 12
Bradley has been serving as an assistant at Penn State for 30 years. He has been chosen as the replacement for Joe Paterno when that dark day comes when Joe Pa retires.
Bradley has been a fan favorite for the Panthers and was in discussion to replace Wannestedt before Haywood was hired.
Maybe they should get it right this time.
