5-Star Tight End Jay Rome: Will He Commit To Georgia or Alabama?

Michael PintoJan 1, 2011

Five-star tight end Jay Rome, the No. 1 prospect at the position from the 2011 recruiting class, looked like he was just about ready to commit to Georgia after his visit to Athens earlier this month, but since then things have cooled off a bit.

Rome's father, Stan, told reporters after the visit that it will "probably be Georgia", and most observers expected the coveted tight end to make the news official shortly after his father's announcement.

Rome is the No. 1-ranked tight end recruit in the country. An extremely athletic tight end with NFL potential, he has all the intangibles to be very successful wherever he ends up playing.

He has tremendous blocking skills and can line up at receiver or tight end. If Rome can improve his strength, he has the potential to be one of the biggest impact freshman in the country in 2011.

While Rome has yet to take another official visit since his trip to Athens, it's been a few weeks since his visit now and an expected commitment to Georgia hasn't happened yet.

That shouldn't necessarily be construed as a bad thing for the Bulldogs, but with a visit scheduled with Alabama in January and Clemson waiting in the wings as well, you can bet Georgia would like to wrap this up as soon as possible.

The Bulldogs still lead this race by a good margin, but you never know what can happen after the coaching staff at Alabama get their hands on Rome. And with the amount of talent from Clemson's 2011 class that's a destination that is only becoming more and more intriguing.

Rome is expected to announce his decision whenever he feels comfortable, with no hard date set for a commitment.

With the Under Armour All-American Game on the schedule this week it wouldn't be surprising to see Rome make his decision on Jan. 5 after the game.

Many of the nation's top recruits will be in attendance and while the U.S. Army All-American Game is traditionally more popular for commitments, it's becoming more common for recruits to do so at the Under Armour Game as well.

So could this finally be the week Rome is ready to make his decision?

We'll be standing by to give you all the latest as the situation develops.
