Jim Tressel Leaving Ohio State Football: Why This Rumor Doesn't Make Sense
Jim Tressel leaving Ohio State football was a big rumor last night and it came from a blog called ChicagoNow.
And it sent people questioning if it was actually true.
The rumors don't make a lot of sense when you look at the grand scheme of things and how the events played out after the report hit the Internet.
Here is why it doesn't make sense, and if you have any thoughts on this rumor, make sure to let it be known in the comments.
No Warning

If this rumor were true, there would at least be some inkling that he was considering leaving.
This isn't like Urban Meyer, where there were whispers and incidents in the past that would lead you to believe that he might possibly be considering leaving the program at some point. Tressel is a huge part of that program and he's synonymous with Ohio State football.
It would have been way out of left field had he left.
Success Rate

The one thing that Tressel has done since he's come to Ohio State is win.
He's won a national championship and kept the Buckeyes playing in high-profile games throughout his tenure, and he rarely struggles as coach of Ohio State. It would make no sense for him to leave the program at its height.
There's no reason for him to leave or for the program to want him gone.
Ohio State's Prominence
3 of 5
Ohio State is one of the top college football programs in the nation.
The Buckeyes are always competitive and always get a bunch of top recruits. It's a coach's dream, and there's no reason for Tressel to leave the program for no reason at all. If he left, coaches would be falling over themselves for that job.
It's a dream job for Tressel at Ohio State.
Violations Aren't that Severe
4 of 5
As far as violations go, what happened to Ohio State last week is nothing.
Sure, the ruling is head-scratching and infuriating when you consider how the Cam Newton situation was handled, but it's not like USC, where the Trojans won't be able to compete for a bowl game after next season.
It's certainly something that wouldn't cause a coach to bail like Pete Carroll.
Gene Smith Denied It

As the rumor started to spread around the Internet, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith took time out from his Christmas plans to dispel any notion that his coach was leaving.
"Merry Xmas everyone," Smith tweeted. "Go back to drinking your eggnog!! Rumors not true.."
That's pretty much as legit as it gets as the rumors go. He would know better than anyone else if they're going to need a new coach. I would expect Tressel to shoot this down and we can all move on with our lives.
