Bowl Games 2010: The Macho Rhino Bowl Selections for Games December 21-24

Macho RhinoDec 21, 2010

The 2010-11 college football bowl season got under way Saturday, and I’m not off to a good start; I missed badly on Fresno State and Ohio, but got BYU.

This week gets bowl season rolling, as you’ll start to see a game nearly every day.

Here are my picks for the bowl games being played between December 21-24.

December 21

Beef 'O' Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl: Southern Miss vs. Louisville

Louisville’s Charlie Strong is coaching his first bowl game as the head of the Cardinals; however, he’s used to facing high-powered offenses in bowl games from the days when he was D-coordinator for the Gators.

Southern Miss has a great offense and will test Strong’s defense.

The key to this game is Louisville’s rushing attack. They’ve got a good offensive line yet face a solid front four from Southern Miss.

The team that controls the line will win this one. I think the ‘Ville will get it done.

My Pick: Louisville 27, Southern Miss 21

December 22

MAACO Bowl Las Vegas: Utah vs. Boise St.

A month ago this would have looked like a BCS-caliber game, but both teams lost games down the stretch that put them in Vegas for this matchup.

Both teams are very talented and well coached. Some have questioned Boise’s motivation, but I think Chris Petersen will have his squad very motivated.

The Utes struggled down the stretch and had their confidence shattered as TCU destroyed them at home. Utah becomes a BCS team next year, as they join the Pac-12.

Boise tends to play well against BCS teams, and that’ll continue. Boise sends out a tremendously talented senior class with a big win.

My Pick: Boise St. 35, Utah 14

December 23

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl: Navy vs. San Diego State

A classic run versus pass game happens in San Diego.

Navy can go a whole game without throwing the ball, whereas the Aztecs have one of the best aerial attacks in college football.

Brady Hoke of SDSU is considered to be a strong candidate for the Michigan job if Rich Rodriguez is removed from his position. That could be a distraction for him and his players.

With this game being played in San Diego in near ideal conditions, I expect a high-scoring game and think San Diego State will prevail.

My Pick: San Diego State 42, Navy 35

December 24

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii vs. Tulsa

Two teams with lackluster defenses should put on the best offensive display of the bowl season.

This is a great Christmas Eve game; both teams have been on a roll, as Tulsa has won six straight and Hawaii nine of 10.

This game could be decided by the coin toss, as the team that gets the ball first will probably lead the entire game, as these two should just go back and forth running up and down the field.

I like Tulsa but think Hawaii at home will get the W.

My Pick: Hawaii 63, Tulsa 56
