Very Early Week Two College Football Thoughts
Right, I'm somewhere in France right now, so I have to be quick, dear readers. Here are some early points:
1. Penn State rolled against Oregon State. Kirk Herbstreit was right on College Gameday—the Nittany Lions need some leadership on the team to stop their teammates getting into trouble. Otherwise, the Lions might not have anybody to play Michigan State.
Love goes out to Evan Royster (141 yards, 3 TDs) and Darryl Clark (215 yards, 2 TDs passing, 61 yards, 1 TD rushing).
Not overly happy about the fact that the defense conceded 342 yards—including over 200 in the air—but, as ESPN says, "Most of them came with the game well out of hand."
2. Ohio State only beating Ohio by a score of 26-14? They were terrible for the most part of the first half, which I saw. If Chris "Beanie" Wells is back, maybe it might make a difference against USC. But on this evidence: not much. USC will probably win in a laugher.
3. What in the heck happened to West Virginia? Losing by 24-3 to East Carolina? No one saw that one coming, even in the driving rain. Look out, world—Lou Holtz will be crowing out this one Monday!
4. Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon, Illinois and Wisconsin all win comfortably. No real surprises.
5. Wake Forest sneaks by Ole Miss, but things will pick up during the Houston Nutt era. You never know, Ole Miss might be pretty useful in a couple of seasons' time. Game of the week thus far? BYU 28, Washington 27. What a game!
6. Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Notre Dame. Weren't people expecting the Irish to put up 50 against San Diego State, a team that lost last week to—get this—Cal Poly. Well, get this—the Irish were losing, 13-7, until midway through the fourth quarter, but Jimmy Clausen pulled it out of the bag late and the Irish won, 21-13.
The Michigan game (they won 16-6 against mighty Miami of Ohio) is going to be pretty close. But this, my friends, isn't a great start for ND Nation. But a win's a win—you can't win 'em all like Georgia.
