UEFA Champions League: The Top 10 Greatest Goals Ever

James RiggioDec 14, 2010

There were many goals to look at and many great ones that did not make this list.

You are about to see a list of the top 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League since the competition changed its name from the European Cup in 1992.

Some of the goals are from players that need no introduction and others by players who may be forgotten or simply never known. Sit back, relax and enjoy as you are about to see some incredible goals.

No. 10 Marc Overmars 2001 Barcelona Vs. Liverpool

1 of 10

Overmars' goal itself wasn't the greatest thing. But it was the lead up to the goal that puts it in the top 10.

Barcelona put together 24 consecutive passes before the Dutchman put it into the net at Anfield.

No. 9 Samuel Eto'o 2005 Barcelona Vs. Panathinaikos

2 of 10

Eto'o scored three times in this match that ended 5-0, the last of which was a brilliant one-touch curve ball that was a touch of pure class.

No. 8 Zinedine Zidane 2002 Real Madrid Vs. Bayer Leverkusen

3 of 10

Zidane's goal would rank the highest among these in importance because it was in a Champions League final and turned out to be the difference in a 2-1 game.

No. 7 Peter Crouch 2006 Liverpool Vs. Galatasaray

4 of 10

Call it a bicycle kick or an overhead kick. Lets face it, it is hard to score one of these for anyone.

Liverpool's Peter Crouch is probably the only player who stands more than 2 meters to have ever accomplished such a feat in such a major competition.

No. 6 Hugo Almeida 2005 Porto Vs. Internazionale

5 of 10

Almeida's goal was an absolute bullet.

There was nothing anyone could do about the free kick he took. Unfortunately for Porto, the goal was not enough as Inter won 2-1.

No. 5 Charles Coridon 2004 Paris Saint-Germain Vs. Porto

6 of 10

Coridon is widely known for this goal.

He overran the ball and the when the cross came in he had to extend his leg backwards to get a touch on the ball and fortunately he was able to find a way to get into the net. Certainly a classic.

No. 4 Amantino Mancini AS Roma Vs. Lyon

7 of 10

Mancini scored one of the best goals in Champions League history with a series of stepovers faking out Lyon's Anthony Réveillère before putting the ball high and into the net.

The ball control on this goal is simply breathtaking.

No. 3 Claudio Lopez 1999 Valencia Vs. PSV Einhoven

8 of 10

Lopez, who has most recently played in Major League Soccer, hit what looked like a grand slam of a Hail Mary pass.

Taking a fly ball in the air from nearly half the field away, he scored an over-the-shoulder fly ball that simply was spectacular.

No. 2 Mauro Bressan 1999 Fiorentina Vs. Barcelona

9 of 10

Bressan was nothing more than a role player for Fiorentina but he became a star for a day in 1999 when he scored a goal that was created out of nothing.

He attempted a bicycle kick off a ball that had bounced in front of him and somehow was able to find the corner of the net. The goal was spectacular because it was surely a shot that even he didn't think had a chance to go in.

No. 1 Mikael Nilsson 1993 IFK Goteborg Vs. PSV Einhoven

10 of 10

Nilsson was known for two outstanding goals in this contest.

But it was his free kick goal that was simply the greatest in the history of the Champions League.

From far outside the box, Nilsson was able to curl the ball not over but around both the wall in front on him and then the goalie, who never expected such a bend on the ball and was completely taken by surprise.

It sometimes needs to be seen in slow motion to fully understand how incredible it was.
