SEC Championship: South Carolina Fans Left Wondering, Why Not Weslye Saunders?

Alex RobertsDec 2, 2010

First of all, I want to say to all of the Auburn fans that may read this... I mean no disrespect to you, your program or Cam Newton. I have enjoyed "talking some junk" with you guys leading up to the championship game.

After all, Cam was cleared of any wrongdoing.  Technically, that would be the right call, since he "wasn't aware" of his fathers despicable actions.

Whether or not you believe that is for another article.

Plus, I am glad he gets to play in the SEC Championship Game.  When (ha) South Carolina wins, I would much rather it be against the real, whole, dangerous Auburn than the unknown quantity the team would be without him.

I think Cam Newton's father is a terrible human being.

There.  I said it.

However, Cam is a good player, and I share a bit of a different view on the matter.  He is a product of his raising, and his father obviously believes that there are very few things more important than money.

He risked and wagered his sons eligibility... his life... for a few bucks.  Poor choices by Cam Newton at Florida aside, I feel for the kid.

However, what in the world happens to those players such as South Carolina's Weslye Saunders and Georgia's A.J. Green?

Weslye Saunders "wasn't aware" that he was getting a discounted rate at the hotel.  He "wasn't aware" of him being behind on his payment being an improper benefit.

Why can't the argument be made that the hotel is at fault for offering him the discounted rate?  They didn't say it was a discount.  They just gave it to him.

What about A.J. Green?  He wasn't aware he sold his jersey to an agent.  (As pointed out below, it is illegal to sell your jersey, period... regardless of who... but seriously, four games?)

He honestly wasn't aware of the fact that the guy was an agent representative.

If I were either one of those players, I would be furious. Don't they have the right to be?

This isn't hating on the choice to clear Cam and make him eligible... it is hating the treatment of others by the NCAA and the inequity of it.  The NCAA either needs to take a stand against all transgressions or back off the smaller ones.

They just created a gray area.
