BCS Standings: Why the Oregon Ducks Will Defeat the Auburn Tigers in Glendale
There is only one week left in the college football season and the BCS National Championship Game is all but determined.
The Auburn Tigers (12-0) sit atop the standings at No. 1, while the Oregon Ducks (11-0) hold down the second spot.
If the BCS announced its bowl games today, then both teams would be playing for it all in Arizona this January.
However, there are still some games left to be played. Oregon must go on the road to battle bitter rival Oregon State, while Auburn plays South Carolina for the SEC Championship in the Georgia Dome.
Though looking at the standings, one quickly finds that Auburn could quite possibly lose to the Gamecocks in a close game and still maintain one of the top two spots.
Oregon, on the other hand, would be fit to defeat the Beavers in Corvallis, because if they fall, undefeated TCU (12-0) would most likely catapult them in the final BCS standings.
Taking into consideration that Auburn has won after trailing 24-0 on the road to the defending national champions already this season, and Oregon won a trap game at California 15-13 just a few weeks ago, it would seem neither of these teams will fall this Saturday.
Both Oregon and Auburn will be favored in their matchups this weekend.
That sets up an epic national championship game between Oregon and Auburn with almost too many storylines to count.
Two of the top Heisman candidates matchup in LaMichael James and Cam Newton, the Cam Newton scandal and the surrounding drama and the presence of two record-breaking offenses which can't seem to be stopped, are just a few of the many storylines.
Once the game starts, however, none of that will matter.
Oregon will jump out on the Tigers early with their quick no-huddle offense, unlike anything Auburn has seen in the SEC.
Auburn's defense has been incredibly suspect all season long, giving up just few enough points to win. However, that same point can be argued for the Tigers, whose defense always seems to make the critical play when the game is on the line.
Still, though, it catches up to them in this game when Oregon is one of the nation's top teams playing with the lead.
Cam Newton plays well and Auburn gets their fair share of points on offense, but an untimely turnover from Newton derails the Tigers' chances late in the game.
Newton, similar to past season's Heisman Trophy winners like Troy Smith and Sam Bradford, falls in the title game to the better team.
Though Auburn is undefeated, without Newton, they are likely an average SEC team that is out of the BCS discussion by October.
Auburn's one-man show finally ends in the desert and Oregon's air and ground attack is too much for the porous Tiger defense to handle.
Oregon wins in a high-scoring thriller in Glendale.
