BCS Rankings Week 14: After Boise State Falls, Who Are the Top 5 Non-BCS Teams?
After Kyle Brotzman's two missed field goals doomed Boise State on Friday night, the Broncos' BCS title hopes were crushed.
The Broncos' loss to a good Nevada Wolf Pack team was a disaster for non-BCS conference schools.
Now, power conference teams will have something to back up their claims that Boise State and TCU couldn't handle playing in a stronger conference every week.
However, despite the loss by Boise State, there are still some very good non-BCS conference teams out there this year.
Let's take a look at the best small-school football teams of 2010.
5. Northern Illinois Huskies
1 of 6
Garrett Wolfe's alma mater is 10-2 on the year, with their only losses coming against Iowa State and Illinois.
The Huskies own wins over Minnesota and Temple and most recently posted a 71-3 thrashing of Eastern Michigan.
They play Miami (OH) on Friday in the MAC Championship Game.
An 11-2 record would be very respectable and would get the Huskies into a nice bowl game.
4. Utah Utes
2 of 6
The Utes are back on track after a tough two-game losing streak against TCU and Notre Dame.
After a rough 47-7 loss to the Horned Frogs, the Utes lost an ugly 28-3 game to the Fighting Irish.
But since then, they have pulled out close wins over San Diego State and BYU to improve to 10-2 on the year.
Their 7-1 Mountain West Conference record is good enough for second place.
3. Boise State Broncos
3 of 6
The Broncos' title hopes are dashed now after a 34-31 loss to Nevada on Friday night.
Though the Broncos had chances to put away the victory, they weren't able to do so, likely costing them third place in the BCS standings.
Though they are still a great football team, they are no longer great enough to be considered for the national championship game.
2. Nevada Wolf Pack
4 of 6
The Wolf Pack's win over Boise State vaults them over the Broncos in the non-BCS football team rankings.
The biggest win in program history will likely lead to the best bowl game in program history.
So how have they gotten to 11-1 on the year? On the legs of quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua, of course.
Both Kaepernick and Taua have rushed for 17 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards on the year, while Kaepernick has added over 2,600 yards and 20 touchdowns through the air as well.
If not for a disappointing 27-21 loss to Hawaii, Nevada might be No. 1 on this list.
But for now, the top spot goes to...
1. TCU Horned Frogs
5 of 6
Any time you have the best defense in the country, you know you're a pretty good football team.
But when you add the fourth-best offense to that mix, watch out.
The Horned Frogs are a dangerous team that should at least get some consideration for the BCS National Championship Game, especially if Oregon or Auburn loses its last game.
TCU would be a tough win for any team, regardless of what conference that team is from.
Look for the Horned Frogs to make some noise in whatever bowl game they end up in.
