BCS Bowl Projections: Which 10 Teams Benefited from Boise State and LSU Losses?
The losses by Boise State and LSU will cause shakeups in the latest BCS Bowl projections.
The drama began late Friday night when Nevada took down Boise State with a 34-31 overtime victory. Besides capturing the WAC title, the Wolf Pack (11-1) also shook up the national title picture and Arkansas' 31-23 victory over the Tigers also knocked them out of an at-large berth in a BCS bowl.
Nevada and Arkansas are among those teams who benefited, but not the only ones.
Here are the top 10 teams that benefited from losses by the Broncos and Tigers:
10. Auburn
1 of 10
The Tigers don't have to worry about LSU breathing down their backs now.
Auburn (12-0) defeated Alabama 28-27, but a loss and LSU win could have put more pressure on their national title hopes. There's also a matchup with South Carolina awaiting in the SEC Championship this Saturday.
9. Nevada
2 of 10
The Wolf Pack (11-1) were already bowl eligible. The WAC has tie-ins with four bowl games, and Friday's win over Boise State could lead to a much better matchup. One possibility could be a matchup with Air Force in the New Mexico Bowl.
8. Michigan State
3 of 10
The Spartans were 10th in last week's BCS rankings and defeated Penn State 28-22 on Saturday.
Don't be surprised if Michigan State is sitting above the Tigers and wiggles into a more prestigious bowl with a little better matchup.
7. Ohio State
4 of 10
LSU and Boise State were both competing for at-large berths in BCS bowls.
Their losses leave room now for others to secure those spots. The Buckeyes (11-1), eighth in last week's BCS standings, should move up a spot and will likely be going back to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
6. Missouri
5 of 10
The Tigers (10-2) defeated Kansas 35-7, and has now has its third 10-win season under coach Gary Pinkel. Missouri was 14th in the BCS standings last week, and could leapfrog LSU for a more respectable bowl game.
5. Oklahoma
6 of 10
The biggest thing was for the Sooners to beat Oklahoma State.
That alone will vault them into the top 10, but LSU and Boise State's losses could give the Sooners' an extra cushion that will help send them to this week's Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington, Texas. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M finished in a three-way tie for the Big 12 South title, but the team with the highest BCS ranking will get to be the representative in the championship game.
4. Wisconsin
7 of 10
The Badgers (11-1) keep on winning.
Wisconsin and Stanford should both move up this week. Despite being tied with Ohio State and Michigan State in the Big Ten, Wisconsin appears to be headed to the Rose Bowl, because it will likely have the higher BCS ranking.
3. Stanford
8 of 10
The Cardinal (11-1) will also move up a spot, and will still be watching this week's SEC Championship between Auburn and South Carolina.
Stanford now takes LSU's spot as the nation's top one-loss team. A South Carolina win could give it a shot to leapfrog TCU and potentially play Oregon for the national championship.
2. Arkansas
9 of 10
The Razorbacks (10-2) now went from a high-profile, second-tier bowl to playing in a BCS bowl.
1. TCU
10 of 10
The Horned Frogs (12-0) don't have to hear anymore about whether they or Boise State belong in a BCS bowl. TCU's clinched a spot in a BCS game, and will be watching the SEC Championship Game as well this weekend.
