Here's Proof Of How Much Steve Addazio Sucks
Amazing what happens when you throw a deep ball, isn't it?
That's what Florida did to Appalachian State, and BOOM—48 points! And guess what else? The offense did it all by itself! That's right, no scores or set-ups by the defense and special teams! I guess they've finally grown up.
Sorry, fellow Gator fans. No, they haven't.
It's Appalachian State. Yeah, they beat Michigan, and Michigan beat Florida that same year. I know, I know. Put Appalachian State back on a field with Michigan. See how many times Michigan loses again. As hilarious as it was (though I wasn't laughing too hard after the Capital One Bowl), it was just a mirage. Appalachian State simply is not that good. LSU walloped them in 2008, and Florida crushed them even worse this year.
They're an FCS team.
The Gators' offensive problems haven't gone away.
Steve Addazio still has less common sense than a narcoleptic chimpanzee.
Florida's offense still sucks.
It's still Addazio's fault.
Think about this: Florida gets more four- and five-star recruits than Justin Bieber gets autograph requests. Many of those top-ranked recruits are on offense. And the best the Gators can do is seven points against Mississippi State, six against Alabama, seven against South Carolina, and 14 legit points against Miami Ohio.
Grudgingly, Florida fans must admit that Addazio can be creative. Trey Burton's jump pass was a great idea. It didn't work, but give him credit for trying something. What pisses me off is this: Addazio treated the result of the play as if Alabama had magically gained 50 points off the interception and all of Florida's players were injured, making it impossible to throw. If at first you don't succeed, then, damn it, try again!
Has anybody seen anything creative out of Addazio since that game? Please, let me know if you have.
I mean, you guys littered the comments box with your agreement that Addazio should not call the plays.
Oh, and by the way, talent is not the issue. IT IS 100% ON ADDAZIO. If you are extremely talented, and want to stay out of the spotlight and waste four years of your football career, or perhaps if you want to be one of those 'where the hell did he come from' NFL rookies, then Florida is the place for you. Look what Gus Malzahn is doing with a guy who got beaten out by John Brantley for Tebow's backup role. Yes, Cameron Newton was once Florida's THIRD string QB.
But let's go game by game in each of the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons, Mullen's last two years and Addazio's first two.
2007: Western Kentucky: W 49-3
Troy: W 59-31
Tennessee: W 59-20 (seven points on a punt return TD: net 52 points)
Ole Miss:W 30-24
Auburn:L 17-20
LSU:L 24-28
Kentucky: W 45-37
Georgia:L 30-42 (seven points on a pick-six: net 23 points)
Vanderbilt: W 49-22
South Carolina: W 51-31
Florida Atlantic: W 59-20 (seven points on a blocked punt: net 52 points)
Florida State: W 45-12
Capital One Bowl vs. Michigan: L 35-41
Obviously, offense was not the problem. It was a young, inexperienced defense that would one day put all 11 of its starters on NFL starting lineups. Now to 2008:
Hawaii: W 56-10 (21 points on two pick-sixes by Ahmad Black and Major Wright, a punt return TD by Brandon James: net 35 points).
Miami (Florida)/The U/Hurricanes...NOT Miami Ohio: W 26-3 (two points on blocked punt by Jeff Demps: net 24 points).
Tennessee: W 30-6 (seven points on punt return TD by Brandon James: net 23 points).
Ole Miss: L 30-31
Arkansas: W 38-7
Kentucky: W 63-5 (seven points on pick-six by Ahmad Black, two other TDs set up by blocked punts basically at the UK goal line: net 42 points).
LSU: W 51-21 (seven points on a pick-six by Brandon Spikes: net 44 points).
Georgia: W 49-10 (88 Joe Haden interception return sets up Tebow score, 62-yard Ahmad Black INT return sets up Tebow to Percy Harvin TD pass: net 35 points).
Vanderbilt: W 42-14
South Carolina: W 56-6 (seven points for Brandon Spikes pick-six: net 49 points).
Citadel: W 70-19
Florida State: W 45-15
SEC Championship Game vs. Alabama: W 31-20
BCS National Championship Game vs. Oklahoma: W 24-14
The defense was much better in 2008, setting Florida up to score quite often. The difference between here and 2009 is glaring, and by some strange coincidence, it just so happened to be Steve Addazio's first year as play-caller. Here we go:
Charleston Southern: W 62-3 (seven points on Brandon James kick return TD: net 55 points...but it's an FCS school, no big deal).
Troy: W 56-6 (again, a vastly inferior program, no biggie).
Tennessee: W 23-13 (three points on a drive set up by Brandon James' 59 yard kick return: net 20 points). Note: Remember how Lane Kiffin talked so much smack before the game? Remember how Florida, with eight of 11 returning starters, was supposed to run it up on UT until their backups were exhausted from scoring so many long touchdowns? What happened to that? Could it have been a change in coordinators? I wonder...
Kentucky: W 41-7 (seven points on blocked punt TD by Chris Rainey: net 34 points).
LSU: W 13-3
Arkansas: W 23-20
Mississippi State: W 29-19 (seven points on Dustin Doe pick-six: net 22 points).
Georgia W 41-17 (seven points on Brandon Spikes pick-six).
Vanderbilt: W 27-3
South Carolina: W 24-14 (seven points on 53-yard interception return by Justin Trattou that set up a Tebow TD: net 17 points).
Florida International: W 62-3 (seven points on Brandon Spikes pick-six).
Florida State: W 37-10
SEC Championship Game vs. Alabama: L 13-32
BCS Sugar Bowl vs. Cincinnati: W 51-24 (they play in the Big Least...come ON)
Now on to 2010:
Miami Ohio: W 34-12 (seven points on Janoris Jenkins pick-six, seven points on 42-yard interception return by Ahmad Black returned to the four, seven points on deflected pass that somehow bounced into Chris Rainey's hands, seven points off of a failed fake punt attempt at Miami Ohio's own 11, the other six points came on Jeff Demps' 73-yard TD run (PAT was blocked). Zero first quarter points).
South Florida: W 38-14 (seven points off of Ahmad Black INT at USF's own 29, seven points on Justin Trattou pick-six: net 24. Zero first quarter points).
Tennessee: W 31-17 (zero first quarter points).
Kentucky: W 48-14 (14 first quarter points (pick 6 by Jeremy Brown: net 41 points.).
Alabama: L 6-31 (zero first quarter points...and a pick-six...THAT'S A NET OF minus-1 POINTS!).
LSU: L 29-33 (seven points on Andre Debose kick return TD, seven off of 52-yard Jelani Jenkins interception return: net 15 points. Zero first quarter points).
Mississippi State: L 7-10 (zero first quarter points).
Georgia: W 34-31 (four UGA turnovers, wanna guess how many first quarter points? That's right—NONE!).
Vanderbilt: W 55-14 (21 points off two blocked punts, fumble recovery TD by Terron Sanders: net 34 points, seven first quarter points).
South Carolina: L 14-36 (seven points on opening kickoff return TD by Andre Debose: net seven points).
Appalachian State: W 48-10 (21 first quarter points).
Florida State: ???
Bowl Game:???
See a difference? Last year, Florida got by because their defense and special teams made big plays. Do I dare ask this: where would Florida be now without help from the defense and special teams?
What do I think will happen against Florida State? Do I think Addazio will grow some nuts and be less predictable with his play-calling? FSU has a great run defense but a shoddy pass D, as we saw against Oklahoma. Will Addazio exploit this? Probably not.
I expect him to to crawl into the fetal position he usually calls plays from, and run dive after dive until even the announcers question his wisdom. I pray to be wrong. I really do. And I also hope I'm wrong when I say that Florida loses five games next year. But with Addazio, it's going to happen.
Sadly, Florida is screwed for the near future. Until they dump their head idiot, they're in for more truculent abuse from opponents and their own fans like me.
