Cam Newton: Which Current NFL QB Does Auburn Star Resemble the Most?

Tom KinslowNov 24, 2010

Cam Newton is heading to the NFL, and it's just a matter of when.

Will the allegations against him force him out of Auburn now, or does he try and boost his draft stock with a another year? When he gets to the next level, he's going to have comparisons to current quarterbacks, and who will those quarterbacks be?

Inside I have 10 NFL quarterbacks that Cam Newton has the most in common with, counting down to the best comparison.

Any thoughts or comments? Leave them below as always.

No. 10: Tony Romo

Tony Romo is way undersized compared to Cam Newton, but they do share something in common.

Both Romo and Newton are elusive quarterbacks who can help extend the play with their legs, and either move the chains on the ground or find an open wideout down the field as they roll out of the pocket. Romo worked some miracles behind that line in Dallas and Newton could be the same way.

Romo's a lot quicker than people give him credit for.

No. 9: Jason Campbell

Jason Campbell is a pretty solid comparison to Cam Newton.

Newton and Campbell both have big arms and can sling the ball down the field. Both are elusive players that can move the pocket around and extend the play long enough to be able to make something happen down the field.

That deep ball is where the two can really be seen as a valid comparison.

No. 8: Michael Vick

Cam Newton is a much bigger player than Michael Vick and would tower over him on the field by a good six inches.

Where the two compare is in quickness and arm strength. No one's nearly as fast as Vick at the quarterback position, but Newton has shown that he can make some game-changing runs under center as a quarterback.

Although there can never be another Michael Vick.

No. 7: Tim Tebow

DENVER - NOVEMBER 14: Quarterback Tim Tebow #15 of the Denver Broncos scores on a 1-yard touchdown run as linebacker Demorrio Williams #53 of the Kansas City Chiefs gives chase during the second quarter at INVESCO Field at Mile High on November 14, 2010

With the way the situation went down at Florida, there's been a lot of comparisons between Tim Tebow and Cam Newton.

Newton has already proven to be a better rusher at the college level than Tebow, and he's got a better arm than the former Gators quarterback. In fact, I'd say that Newton has more tools to succeed at the next level than Tebow outside of the Heisman winner's intangibles.

However, their playing styles are pretty similar, even if the physical tools aren't.

No. 6: Vince Young

There hasn't been this much discussion around a college quarterback since Vince Young was dominating for the Texas Longhorns.

They're both game-changing players, and both have big arms that can really throw the deep ball. Vince Young was a better runner than Newton at the collegiate level, but there are a lot of comparisons that translate between the two.

However, don't expect Newton to be going in the top five of the draft like Young.

No. 5: Byron Leftwich

Byron Leftwich is built exactly like Cam Newton, minus a one inch difference in height.

They have very big arms, however, Leftwich is about as mobile as a statue, while Newton is a much more mobile quarterback who can make plays with his legs.

However, there is a lot more in common between the two than most quarterbacks in the league.

No. 4: David Garrard

David Garrard isn't the quickest man in the NFL, but when he needs to run, he can get the job done.

Just look at that huge run against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs a few years ago. We all know he can throw the ball down the field. Just look at the Hail Mary win against the Texans, where he also used his legs to extend that play.

Newton is a much bigger quarterback than Garrard is though.

No. 3: Donovan McNabb

8 of 10
LANDOVER, MD - NOVEMBER 15: Donovan McNabb #5 of the Washington Redskins looks to throw a pass against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 15, 2010 at FedExField in Landover, Maryland. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

Remember those days when Donovan McNabb used to be a feared rusher?

No one's ever questioned his ability to sling the ball down the field, but McNabb used to kill teams with his legs before a couple of injuries really took most of that ability from him. Before there was Michael Vick, there was McNabb and he was a great rusher like Newton.

Newton's bigger, but the young McNabb played a lot like Newton.

No. 2: Ben Roethlisberger

9 of 10
PITTSBURGH - NOVEMBER 21: Ben Roethlisberger #7 of the Pittsburgh Steelers drops back to pass against the Oakland Raiders during the game on November 21, 2010 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

Ben Roethilsberger and Cam Newton have a lot in common.

They're both similar in size and weight and have big arms, but Newton is a much, much faster quarterback than Roethlisberger. No one's ever going to mistake Big Ben for a track star out there on the field, but he can certainly make plays with his feet.

How else has he survived that long behind that shoddy offensive line in Pittsburgh?

No. 1: Josh Freeman

10 of 10
TAMPA, FL - NOVEMBER 14: Quarterback Josh Freeman #5 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scrambles against the Carolina Panthers during the game at Raymond James Stadium on November 14, 2010 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by J. Meric/Getty Images)

Josh Freeman and Cam Newton have the same exact build, except for a difference in two pounds on the scale.

They both have great arms and can be mobile when they need to be. Freeman has great clutch genes, and if you watched how Auburn closed out Georgia a couple of weeks ago, you saw it in Newton as well. Although, we'll get a good test of that with Newton on Friday.

Freeman and Newton is the best comparison when looking to the next level.
