College Football Fail: The Weekend's Worst Games, Plays, Players and Decisions

T.J. McaloonNov 14, 2010

Everyone likes to complain, bitch, whine and moan about sports. It's what we call "arm chair quarterbacking or coaching."

Here in this slide show, we will look back at last week's worst calls, games, plays, players and decisions.

Sure, there were plenty of terrible games this week; and sure, there were plenty of dumb moves by players and coaches alike. However, two things: one, you do not want to click through a million slides and two, well, it would take way to long to research all of the games from this past week.

So stick it out and re-live some of the worst from this week's games.

Biggest Boneheaded Play

The biggest bonehead play of the weekend was from the Cal-Oregon game. Mid-way in the fourth quarter, Cal had Oregon on the ropes in Cal's house. The Cal Bears defense played great all game, keeping the number one team in the nation in scoring to only 15 points.

Cal drove all the way down to the Oregon 10-yard line. Then they could not punch it into the end-zone for the go ahead touchdown. So a 20-yard field goal was all but a sure thing, right?

Right?

Cal Bears fans please come off the ledge and just click to the next slide so that you do not have to relive this moment.

Gone? Good.

Cal's kicking team lined up for the go ahead field goal to put them up two. Snap, ball down, kick is up and good! But wait there is a whistle. Penalty on Cal, re-do the kick.

Snap, ball down, kick wide right.

Cal loses 15-13.

Worst Coaching Decision

This award goes to you, Pittsburgh Panthers head coach, Dave Wannstedt. Congrats, may this award go right there next to your Big East titles.

Wait, he does not have any of those?

Oh, that is right; when his Pittsburgh teams start to get any sort of momentum, a winning streak or good playing from their defense, then everything goes up in smoke.

Take in point the game this week against UCONN. Pitt was 3-0 against their Big East opponents and had to win just two of their last four games to clinch the Big East and a BCS bowl game.

Instead of taking care of business on the road in UCONN, yes a stadium that ranks up there next to "The Swamp" in Florida and "Death Valley" in LSU, Wannstedt led his Pitt team to a 30-28 defeat.

Now, they have to win two of their last three games. Fear the Wannstash, Panthers fans!

Questionable Referee Call of the Week

The picture here on this slide is perfect. This fumble by Cam was called a touchdown by the refs on the field at first. Then a booth review was ordered, and it seemed that as soon as Cam hit the pile, the ball came loose from his hands. Then the ensuing pile up for the loose ball ended up in a Georgia players hands.

But the booth upheld the ruling of a touchdown giving Auburn the 49-31 victory.

If that was called correctlya fumbleGeorgia has a huge turnover and has a chance to cut the lead to at least two points.

Worst Individual Performance

In a season that has seen Jeremiah Masoli play alright, it saw him play his worst game of the year. The game this week against a win-less Tennessee in conference play seemed like an easy win.

However, Masoli fell apart in this game, never giving his team a chance to win. Masoli's line for the game:

Seven completions on 18 attempts, 80 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

Mississippi lost 52-14, improving their record to 4-6 overall, 1-5 in the SEC.

Two weeks ago, Indiana vs. a ranked Iowa team at home, final score, 18-13.

This week after a quarter and a half of football against a ranked Wisconsin team on the road: 10-10.

Then, all hell breaks lose, and Wisconsin scores 73 more points than Indiana's 10 points.

Yes, you read that correctly: Wisconsin went on to score 73 more bleeping points to Indiana's 10 measly points.

Final score of the game: Wisconsin 83-Indiana 20. Indiana's record now on the year: 4-6 overall, 0-6 in the Big Ten.

This Team Is Really in The Top-25?

Why is this Mississippi State team ranked not only in the Top-25, but at 22? They started the season losing two of their first three games. Then they did go on to win their next seven games. Last week against Alabama, they were blown out in Alabama 30-10.

Now, it is one thing to say that they play in the SEC West division and have to face three other teams that are not only ranked, but ranked in the top-15.

However, this year Mississippi State has beaten only one ranked team, Florida, and has lost all of their other games against ranked opponents: vs. Auburn 17-14; vs. LSU 29-7; and vs. Alabama 30-10.

Can It Get Any Worse?

Can it get any worse for this Texas Longhorns team? Is Garrett Gilbert really that bad? Does the offense know what to do when they do not have a mobile quarterback like Vince Young or Colt McCoy?

Currently, they are on a four-game losing streak. In fact, they have lost six out of their last seven games!

But the season was not a terrible waste in the beginning. They started out 3-0, then lost two straight. But a big win in Nebraska had some Longhorns fans thinking that they still had a shot at the Big 12 title.

Now, four losses in a row have those same fans wishing for Colt McCoy back.

Worst Game III

8 of 10

To end this slide show we are going to find the three worst games of the week.

Number three in our poll is LSU vs. Louisiana-Monroe. Final score LSU 51-LA-Monroe 0.

If you fell asleep for this game then you were not the only one. Luckily, though, the game was not on any national television networks, only being shown on the SEC network.

But, for those of you who are LSU fans, this game had you back in the tailgate before halftime, finishing off those Jack and Cokes.

Worst Game II

9 of 10
PISCATAWAY, NJ - NOVEMBER 25: Kenny Britt #88 of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights is grabbed by Tanard Jackson #28 of the Syracuse University Orange on November 25, 2006 at Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

Number two on our list was a barn burner of a Big East game between two powerhouses in the conference in Syracuse and Rutgers.

In all seriousness, there was only 111 yards of passing for Rutgers in the whole game, between four quarterbacks. Syracuse turned the ball over three times. And the final score of the game was 17-13 Syracuse.

Seven points in the first quarter for Syracuse, three in the second for Rutgers, 10 in the third between the two teams and another three points in the final quarter to seal the victory for the Orange.

Yawn.

Worst Game of The Week

10 of 10
GAINESVILLE, FL - NOVEMBER 13: Stephen Garcia #5 of the South Carolina Gamecocks waves to fans after winning a game against the Florida Gators at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on November 13, 2010 in Gainesville, Florida. The Gamecocks beat the Gators 36-14.

If you are a South Carolina fan, then this slide is not for you. For you, the game was wonderful and not the worst game of the week.

For the rest of us who had to put up with this big pile of crap of an SEC East title game; well, then you are in agreement with me.

36-14 final score in a game that was never close. How does this Florida team, at home, put on such a horrible game? Is this Florida offense that incompetent under John Brantley?

But for those South Carolina fans who have never won the SEC East division, congrats to you. Good luck against Auburn in the SEC Title game. Finish the job this time and do not take out your senior quarterback in the fourth quarter.
