NFL Week 10: The Buffalo Bills Live and 25 Things We Learned
Week 10 in the NFL showed us a lot of great things, like the Buffalo Bills pulling out a victory, the Browns squandering a victory, and the beginning of the Brad Childress Execution Watch.
Every week in the NFL is illuminating in its own way, and Week 10 was no different.
So let's quit talking about it and get to the lessons learned this week.
25. The Dallas Cowboys May Be Turning A Corner
1 of 25
So far, you can't say the coaching change in Dallas didn't have an effect. The Cowboys came out in the first half of the Giants game and completely rocked the Giants with much better play on defense, one of the huge glaring holes under Wade Phillips.
The rest of the game was all Dallas, and the Giants still are wondering what happened.
So you can teach some old dogs new tricks in Dallas, and Jerry Jones has to be smiling.
24. Tyler Thigpen Still Exists
2 of 25
Tyler Thigpen is still alive and kicking. No, seriously, he was on the field and led the Dolphins on a scoring drive in the fourth quarter.
It was a strange day for the Dolphins, but since they got a win out of it, no one is complaining that much.
23. Nick Folk Is Trying To Kick Himself Out Of A Job
3 of 25
Nick Folk did not have a good day vs. Green Bay a few weeks ago, and then he missed three kicks vs. the Browns with an opportunity for a fourth miss thwarted by Mark Sanchez throwing the game-winning touchdown.
If the Jets start auditioning kickers this week, don't be surprised.
22. Roddy White Can Still Play With A Knee Brace
4 of 25
Roddy White may have sprained his knee and had to wear a knee brace, but that didn't stop him from getting 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Knee brace? I don't know about any knee brace.
21. The Ravens Defense Isn't As Fearsome As It Used Be
5 of 25
Remember when the Ravens defense didn't give up fourth-quarter leads and destroyed quarterbacks?
Yeah, those were the days.
20. The Detroit Lions Are Not Perfect
6 of 25
The Detroit Lions are a rebuilding team, this is an accepted fact.
But the Lions were showing real signs of life this season, and coming into Sunday's game, there actually still was a scenario where the Lions could've slipped into the postseason.
Those hopes are pretty much gone now, but the Lions are going to be a team to watch going forward and into next year.
19. Brett Favre...Something, Something
7 of 25
Today, we learned Brett Favre still is old and still will throw three picks in a game.
In other news, water is wet.
18. Jay Cutler Got Through A Game Without 10 Interceptions
8 of 25
Granted, Cutler still threw two picks, but they didn't come back to haunt the Bears.
Cutler did throw for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns, and he didn't get sacked 24.5 times.
17. The Giants Need To Do Better Maintenance On Their New Stadium
9 of 25
A transformer fire knocked out lights and power to the New Meadowlands at the beginning of the second half of the game.
Considering how poorly the Giants were playing in the first half, knocking the power out may have been the best thing for them.
16. Tackling Is A Concept Foreign To The Cleveland Browns
10 of 25
The Browns had several chances to sack Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, especially late in the game and in overtime, but the time-tested skill of wrapping him up and bringing him down isn't a skill set possessed by Browns defenders this week.
I'm sure Head Coach Eric Mangini will make sure this little oversight is fixed after this week.
15. The Colts Don't Need Peyton Manning To Win, Only Carson Palmer
11 of 25
Carson Palmer threw three picks, two of which nearly turned into Pick Sixes, but the Bengals had five turnovers total, and Palmer didn't really do much to rally the Bengals to a victory.
Now, here are the real questions to ask: Is Carson Palmer done? Was his 2008 elbow injury a career-defining moment for all the wrong reasons?
14. Jimmy Clausen Is No Colt McCoy
12 of 25
Jimmy Clausen got another start this week, and he didn't do much to lose the game, but he really didn't do a whole lot to win it either.
Clausen threw 191 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions, and the Panthers still have no real idea if Clausen can be the future of this franchise.
13. LeGarrette Blount Isn't Going Anywhere
13 of 25
LeGarrette Blount rushed for 91 yards on Sunday, including a touchdown. Blount is on his way to being the best steal in the NFL this year as he was passed up by every team in the draft and cut by the Titans after training camp.
The Bucs decided to take a chance on Blount, who was being championed as first-round draft material in some corners prior to "The Punch," and he's now starting to live up to that billing.
12. The Texans Are The New Cowboys
14 of 25
Okay, the title of this slide may be a bit harsh, but seriously? What the heck happened to the Texans? They went from leading the division to now being at the bottom.
The stunning, last-second loss to the Jaguars now will force the Texans to re-evaluate everything.
11. The Jaguars Planned The Last-Second Victory. No, Really.
15 of 25
According to the postgame story, the Jaguars act out what turned out to be the last play of the game during practice sometimes, even though they don't actually practice a play like it.
So fooling around at practice paid off. There's a lesson there.
10. Kyle Orton Still Can Throw The Ball
16 of 25
Kyle Orton threw for just under 300 yards and four touchdowns. That's pretty impressive.
Even more impressive, the Broncos got a win.
9. Tim Tebow Is Creeping Into Games More
17 of 25
Tim Tebow threw a three-yard touchdown pass, ran for another, and is making contributions to the offense.
If this keeps up, Tebow is going to start showing up on fantasy league rosters.
8. Derek Anderson Didn't Lose The Game For The Cardinals
18 of 25
Derek Anderson didn't have a horrible day for the Cardinals, but then again he didn't have a great day, either.
Still, if Anderson got through a game without throwing three picks, that can be considered a good game for the Cardinals quarterback.
7. The NFC West Barely Qualifies As A Real NFL Football Division
19 of 25
At 5-4, the Seahawks now lead the NFC West.
Carry on.
6. The Titans Didn't Benefit From Having Randy Moss
20 of 25
Randy Moss got one whole catch and the Titans lost to the Dolphins and their third-string quarterback.
Moss was supposed to be another target downfield, and a way to stretch the defense out so Chris Johnson could get more yards.
While the Moss decoy technique worked in Johnson's favor, it wasn't enough.
5. The Rams Aren't That Good In Overtime
21 of 25
Three-and-out in overtime, and that was about it for the Rams on Sunday after playing a really close game against the San Francisco 49ers.
But, as mentioned earlier, this is the NFC West, so the Rams aren't out of it yet.
4. Troy Smith Has A New Job
22 of 25
Troy Smith threw for more than 350 yards and a touchdown as the 49ers rolled to another victory on Sunday.
Head Coach Mike Singletary is off the hot seat for another week, and the 49ers are looking at Smith with real hope now.
3. The Pittsburgh Steelers Like Their Throwback Uniforms
23 of 25
Do the Steelers even wear their modern uniforms anymore? It seems like every other week the Steelers are in their throwbacks with the yellow helmets.
At this rate, the black helmet will end up being the throwback.
2. Tom Brady Doesn't Think The Cleveland Browns Are A Real Team
24 of 25
In a pregame interview, Tom Brady noted that losing to a team like the Cleveland Browns really forced the Patriots to re-evaluate a few things.
Wow, that was harsh, especially considering the Browns had beaten the Saints the week before and the head coach used to work for Bill Belichick.
1. The Buffalo Bills Can Win Football Games
25 of 25
The battle to have the rights to the No. 1 overall pick in next year's draft just went to the Carolina Panthers.
Congratulations, Buffalo, you're no longer the worst team in the league. By beating the Carolina Panthers, they now edge them out in power rankings.
