Oklahoma Football: Sooners' Big Home Win Doesn't Answer Questions

Billy RayNov 14, 2010

Yes, the Sooners responded to the debacle in College Station like they usually do after a road loss. Yes, the Sooners beat Texas Tech easily. Yes, they dominated the game.

Yes, Tech fans should be worried about the decision to fire Mike "Get Those Fat Girls Out of the Locker Room" Leach and hire Tommy "The Big 12 Is Doomed" Tuberville.

The problem is, the win yesterday did little to alleviate the concerns of the fans for the Team in Crimson and Cream. This blowout home win was a nice way to put A&M in the rearview, but it wasn't exactly a shocker. In fact, it was pretty much expected that OU would roll this Red Raiders team at the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium.

Oklahoma has only lost to Texas Tech twice with Bob Stoops in charge and both of those losses were in Lubbock. Last year, the Red Raiders stomped OU in a game most Sooner fans would rather forget. In 2007, Tech beat OU with a little home cooking from the refs. Oklahoma almost always kills Tech in Norman.

The problem is, the Sooners' next two games are on the road. Unless you are just emerging from a coma, you are are painfully aware of Oklahoma's well documented struggles when away from home.

The next game is in Waco against a Robert Griffin led Baylor team, by far the best team the Bears have fielded in the Big 12. Before losing their last two games, to A&M and OSU, Baylor was leading the Big 12 South division.

The season-ending Bedlam game in Stillwater against the 9-1 Oklahoma State Cowboys could be for the right to play in the Big 12 Championship game. OSU just destroyed Texas for their first win in Austin since 1944. OSU is also in sole possession of first place in the South division for the first time.

The problem is, as good as the Sooners look at home, they look equally lost on the road. They blow red-zone scoring opportunities on offense and the defense crumbles when it desperately needs a stop. Whether it is dropped TD passes, blown coverages or missed tackles and blocks, OU is a completely different team on the road. They put themselves into positions to win on the road and then blow every chance they get.

On the road against a good team, a visiting team is usually one of three things:

A bad team that doesn't give itself a chance to win.

A good team that gives itself the chances it needs to win the game.

A great team that takes advantage of those opportunities and finds a way to win.

Oklahoma is a GREAT team at home.

On the road, not so much.

Bob Stoops isn't willing to address the road issues with the press but he has to be concerned in private. A team-only meeting to specifically address the road issues would seem to be a wise choice.

Maybe it has already been done and it didn't work, but something has got to give. These Sooners display way too much potential to play so poorly away from home.
