Report: Cecil Newton Admitts To Asking For Money Say's WSB-Atlanta
WSB-TV in Atlanta and The Birmingham News in Alabama said a source told reporter Mark Winne that Cam Newton's father has admitted he asked for money from Mississippi State for his son to play there, but neither his son nor his wife knew about it.
The report said Cecil Newton said Auburn did not know of the request for money.
Mississippi State Athletics Director Scott Stricklin issued a statement tonight that said someone had asked for money for a "student-athlete" to play at the school, but the request was denied.
The WSB report said Cecil Newton Sr. has admitted having conversations with an ex-Mississippi State University player about the possibility of obtaining money if Cam Newton signed to play football at Mississippi State.
The WSB report said Cecil Newton steadfastly maintained that no money ever changed hands. Cecil Newton said his son's hands are clean, and has made it clear that Cam Newton and his mother knew nothing about the money discussions, nor did Auburn.
Winne said the source acknowledged sympathies toward the Newtons. The source also said the player and both parents have demonstrated a willingness to cooperate with the NCAA.
Contributor Note: I traveled down to Auburn for Saturday's game against Georgia. Cam Newton did get on the team bus to travel with the players to the team hotel. Speculation has been swirling most of the day about Cam Newtons ability to play against Georgia.
Auburn has refused comment on any questions concerning Newton or his status with the team in the last couple of days. Obviously due to the late hour there is no way of confirming what Cam Newton's status is. More to come as information is gathered.
