BCS Standings Week 11: Bowl Projections Based on Latest Rankings
The BCS Standings for Week 11 (fourth set of rankings) were just released on ESPN last night, and the Oregon Ducks and Auburn Tigers remain at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
As the college football season nears its end, it's time for the bowl projections based on the latest set of rankings.
Teams like Utah, Alabama, Arizona and Oklahoma didn't do themselves any favors by losing while teams like LSU, and Stanford are moving up in the world.
The Big Ten schools, Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio State, and Michigan State, now have a better shot at a second BCS-bowl bid after some of these teams fell.
With the current standings, the TCU Horned Frogs and Boise State Broncos would miss out (yet again) on shots at the national championship, but they would likely earn BCS Bowl bids.
So, what would the bowl picture look like if the season ended today?
BCS National Championship Game (BCS No. 1 Vs. BCS No. 2)
1 of 36
Oregon Ducks vs. Auburn Tigers
Both teams have tough games remaining and this could change, but if the season ended today, they'd play for the national title.
And for all the non-AQ fans out there, it's a virtual lock that neither TCU nor Boise will pass either of these teams unless one of them loses.
Sugar Bowl (SEC Vs. at-Large)
2 of 36
LSU vs. Boise State
If Auburn goes to the BCS title game, the Sugar Bowl gets the first replacement pick.
It will be inclined to pick an SEC team (although it doesn't have to), and if LSU wins out, they won't make the SEC title game, but they'll likely be ranked around where they are right now (No. 5).
If the season ended today, the Sugar Bowl would almost definitely pick the Tigers.
It also gets the first at large pick, and since Boise State is currently No. 4 in the BCS, there's a good chance the Broncos wind up here.
Although we all know about the bowls' BCS-conference biases, so they could theoretically choose a team like Ohio State here.
But the gap is so large between Boise and any other options that I think this is a pretty safe bet.
Orange Bowl (ACC Vs. at-Large)
3 of 36
Virginia Tech vs. Stanford
Virginia Tech is sitting pretty in the ACC, and is looking primed for an Orange Bowl bid.
Stanford is the second-highest ranked team eligible for an at-large bid (No. 6), and would likely end up being selected by the Orange Bowl.
Fiesta Bowl (Big 12 Vs. at-Large)
4 of 36
Nebraska vs. Pittsburgh
Nebraska is currently in the Big 12 driver's seat, but it will likely need to beat Oklahoma State again in the title game to wind up here.
Pitt doesn't deserve to be here, but it will because of the Big East's automatic bid.
Rose Bowl (Pac-10 Vs. Big Ten)
5 of 36
Michigan State vs. TCU
Michigan State currently sits atop the Big Ten, and would slot into the Rose Bowl.
TCU would currently be an automatic qualifier for a BCS-bowl game out of the MWC, and if the Rose Bowl loses Oregon to the title game, it is obligated to pick the Horned Frogs.
Fight Hunger Bowl (WAC Vs. Pac-10 No. 6)
6 of 36
Fresno State vs. UCLA
UCLA also will have a tough time making this bowl, needing another two victories.
Birmingham Bowl (Big East No. 5/6 Vs. SEC. No. 8/9)
7 of 36
Louisville vs. Georgia
Georgia still actually has an outside shot at winning the SEC, but as of now the Bulldogs would likely end up in a matchup against the mediocre Cardinals.
Cotton Bowl (Big 12 No. 2 Vs. SEC)
8 of 36
Oklahoma State vs. Arkansas
This would be a hell of a matchup, pitting the No. 10 Cowboys against the No. 15 Razorbacks.
GoDaddy.com Bowl (MAC No. 1/2 Vs. Sun Belt No. 2)
9 of 36
Northern Illinois vs. Florida International
FIU is second in the Sun Belt, but needs three more wins to become bowl-eligible.
The Sun Belt is really bad.
Gator Bowl (Big Ten No. 4/5 Vs. SEC No. 6)
10 of 36
Iowa vs. South Carolina
After beating Alabama, I don't think the Gamecocks had the Gator Bowl in mind.
And don't count on Iowa beating Ohio State, Ricky Stanzi and the Hawkeyes are the real deal.
Dallas Classic (Big Ten No. 7 Vs. Big 12/C-USA)
11 of 36
Michigan vs. Texas Tech
At least Texas Tech won't have to leave its own state.
And the two squads get to play in Cowboys Stadium.
Not a bad deal.
But a berth here might not be enough to get Rich Rod off the hot seat.
Outback Bowl (Big Ten No. 3 Vs. SEC)
12 of 36
Ohio State vs. Florida
Both of these teams have outside shots at winning their respective conferences, but I wouldn't bet on either of them.
Capital One Bowl (SEC No. 2 Vs. Big Ten No. 2)
13 of 36
Alabama vs. Wisconsin
This would be a BCS-bowl worthy matchup.
Chick-Fil-A Bowl (ACC No. 2 Vs. SEC No. 5)
14 of 36
Florida State vs. Mississippi State
The Seminoles have really disappointed lately, but there's always a chance they steal an Orange Bowl bid by winning the ACC championship game.
Sun Bowl (ACC No. 4 Vs. Pac-10 No. 4)
15 of 36
NC State vs. California
Just like Florida State, the Wolfpack can still win the ACC.
Liberty Bowl (C-USA No. 1 Vs. SEC No. 8/9)
16 of 36
UCF vs. Kentucky
The Case Keenum injury really opened the door for UCF in C-USA.
Meineke Car Care Bowl (ACC No. 5 Vs. Big East No. 3)
17 of 36
South Florida vs. North Carolina
This season wasn't exactly what the Tar Heels were hoping for, but at least they're bowl-eligible.
Holiday Bowl (Pac-10 No. 3 Vs. Big 12 No. 5)
18 of 36
Oregon State vs. Oklahoma
Oregon State has a 3-2 conference record, but due to its tough out-of-conference schedule, it still needs two wins to become bowl-eligible.
That will be easier said than done in the deep Pac-10.
And by the way, this would be a pretty damn good game.
Armed Forces Bowl (MWC No. 4/5 Vs. C-USA)
19 of 36
Ohio vs. East Carolina
With the MWC getting a BCS bid, they'll only garner four non-BCS bowl bids.
Ohio has seven wins already and will play in the postseason.
And East Carolina could really use Chris Johnson back.
Music City Bowl (ACC No. 6 Vs. SEC No. 7)
20 of 36
Maryland vs. Ole Miss
The ACC's No. 6 team vs. the SEC's No. 7?
Talk about an unfair matchup.
Pinstripe Bowl (Big East No. 4 Vs. Big 12 No. 7)
21 of 36
West Virginia vs. Kansas State
Two disappointing teams, one boring game.
Military Bowl (ACC No. 8 Vs. C-USA)
22 of 36
Clemson vs. Southern Methodist
You couldn't pay me to watch this one.
Alamo Bowl (Pac-10 No. 2 Vs. Big 12 No. 3)
23 of 36
Arizona vs. Baylor
Both of these teams could have crashed the BCS-bowl party, but both were embarrassed last weekend.
Texas Bowl (Big Ten No. 6 Vs. Big 12 No. 6)
24 of 36
Illinois vs. Texas A&M
Texas A&M is looking much better with Ryan Tannenhill under center.
So much for Jerrod Johnson becoming a Heisman candidate.
Insight Bowl (Big Ten No. 4/5 Vs. Big 12 No. 4)
25 of 36
Penn State vs. Missouri
Mizzou has really fallen off the map.
Champs Sports Bowl (ACC No. 3 Vs. Big East No. 2)
26 of 36
Miami vs. Syracuse
Syracuse is surprising people in the Big East, but the Big East is bad. Really bad.
And what happened to Miami?
Ohio State's one big win doesn't seem so big anymore.
Independence Bowl (MWC No. 3 Vs. ACC No. 7)
27 of 36
Air Force vs. Georgia Tech
What's going on in the ACC? It's awful this year.
Little Caesars Pizza Bowl (MAC No. 1/2 Vs. Big Ten No. 8)
28 of 36
Temple vs. Northwestern
Northwestern's Dan Persa is one of the best college quarterbacks you've never heard of.
And he's a true dual-threat.
Hawaii Bowl (WAC Vs. C-USA)
29 of 36
Hawaii vs. Southern Miss
Why did anyone think Hawaii could beat Boise State?
Poinsettia Bowl (MWC No. 2 Vs. Navy)
30 of 36
San Diego State vs. Navy
San Diego State, the third-best team in the MWC, is actually pretty good.
I'd take them over the Big East's No. 3 any day (can't believe I just said that).
Maaco Bowl (MWC No. 1 Vs. Pac-10 No. 5)
31 of 36
Utah vs. Arizona State
The biggest joke of 2010: Utah being ranked No. 5 by the BCS.
And for the record, USC would get the nod here if it weren't for a certain NCAA sanction.
St. Petersburg Bowl (Big East No. 5/6 Vs. C-USA)
32 of 36
UConn vs. Tulsa
Why do these teams even get to play in a bowl...
New Orleans Bowl (Sun Belt No. 1 Vs. C-USA)
33 of 36
Troy vs. UTEP
Fun fact: Troy boasts the nation's 14th-best passing attack.
Humanitarian Bowl (MAC No. 3 Vs. WAC)
34 of 36
Toledo vs. Nevada
Toledo lost to Arizona, 41-2.
It also beat Purdue.
And is Nevada really No. 21 in the BCS...really?
New Mexico Bowl (MWC No. 4/5 Vs. WAC)
35 of 36
BYU vs. Idaho
Idaho has the nation's fourth-most prolific passing attack, at 330.8 yards per game.
It needs two more wins for bowl eligibility, though.
